Northern Rail suspended all services between Bolton and Blackburn for three hours while emergency services attended, and the 35-year-old victim was taken to the major trauma centre at Royal Preston Hospital.

A neighbour living near the station rushed out to help the man.

The woman, who asked not to be named, said: “I heard the train signal really loudly and heard him scream.

“I called to him, rang an ambulance, grabbed a blanket and went to him.

“I basically had to put pressure on the wound — both his feet were very badly damaged. He was in a lot of pain and screaming.

“The train stopped a mile down the track and the guards ran back. The woman driver thought she had killed him, she was distraught.”

It is understood the man had been in the Strawbury Duck pub in Overshores Road shortly before the accident.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said the man was still in hospital in a stable condition.
