AN accident has sparked calls for a change to the speed limit in a country road.

The driver of a black Mercedes had to be cut out of the car after mounting the curb, spinning and hitting two trees in Horden View, Blackburn.

The accident – in which no one was seriously injured – has added to safety concerns in the road, which is subject to a sudden drop from 60mph to 30mph as cars head down the hill from Brokenstone Road.

There are further concerns as Blackburn with Darwen Council has identified land at nearby Gib Lane as a potential development site for more than 400 homes, which would lead to even more traffic in the area.

Livesey with Pleasington Coun Derek Hardman said he received a number of emails from residents following the accident on Saturday. He said: “We have had numerous accidents and the residents keep asking the council to do something.

“I get told that the more serious the accident the more points it scores, but how long do we have to wait?

“They need to do something now before someone is badly injured.

“There are families in that road with children and if the accident happened later in the day one of them could have been killed.”

Coun Hardman said it was time the speed limit was changed.

He said: “It is 60mph until just before Horden View when it becomes 30mph.

“It is a bad bend and it is very narrow and you get cars coming down the hill at 60mph so it is very dangerous.

“We have had accidents there where people have been injured but it is only a matter of time before someone is killed.”

Coun Hardman added that if a development at Gib Lane went ahead, it could just make things worse.

He said: “One of the proposed exits is nearby so there will be a lot more traffic in the area.”

Blackburn with Darwen Council executive member for regeneration Maureen Bateson said: “If Coun Hardman raises the issue with me, I will be happy to look into it.”

I suspect that the residents are more concerned about the building of the new estate and the fact that an accident has occurred they are trying to turn to their advantage in objecting to it.

The NEW round EXTENDED curb outside train station is a big problem too for cars turning round the corner. Specially for when u turn the corner just after train station coming from Morrisons towards Darwen St. At that turning. It needs sorting asap before anything bad happens

I have to agree with Councillor Hardman. I travel daily From Bog Height Rd to Horden View and the number of idiots driving at too fast a speed is beyond belief. It's a country road which is obscured at many sections by overgrown vegetation and sharp corners. You have the added problem of drivers coming from Tockholes Rd, Heys Lane and Gib Lane taking a chance and pulling out, hoping that no one is coming round the bend at the farm.

When will people learn? You can lower the speed limit to whatever you like, it won't stop idiots driving like idiots. Start educating drivers and stop handing out licences to people who shouldn't be on our roads.
