Accrington Stanley mourn death of former chairman Eric Whalley

Blackburn Citizen: Eric Whalley with former Stanley manager John Coleman Eric Whalley with former Stanley manager John Coleman

FORMER Accrington Stanley chairman Eric Whalley has died, aged 74.

The non-league legend, who was also well known on the local cricket circuit, represented the club as an A team player, then manager before taking over the running of the club in 1995.

He set about guiding the club through the non-league pyramid and into the Football League as well as developing the former Crown Ground, now Store First Stadium.

He was also a fine cricketer with Rishton in the Lancashire League and was the club's president until earlier this year.

Current Stanley chairman Peter Marsden led the tributes.

“Eric was Accrington Stanley,” he said.

“His tireless efforts made the club what it is today and we will forever be grateful to him. Our Football League status is a continuing reminder of everything he did for the club.”

All Lancashire League clubs will hold a minute's silence before Sunday's games.

Eric Whalley,a loud mouthed, egotistica, penny pinching swearing man if ever i met one,but what a man,His passion for the game of football and in particular his love for Accrington Stanley F.C. was immence and this game and the game of football from grass roots to the football league is a far worse off plce due to Eric's death. His pssion did t times get the better off him but he was someone who called spade a spde,he would give you a bollocking one minute then take you to the pub for dinner and a pint,I always remeber him for one funny incident,I was reffereeing a match involving Eric's team and he took me in his car to the match IMUST ADMIT I HAD A BAD GAME AND AFTERWARD ERIC LEFT ME STRANDED AT THE GROUND. he was agiant amongst men and my condolences go to Nessie and Russ and the rest off the family,I vhad the pleasure of working for Eric at E and W Cartons and also at ASFC and he will be sorely misse,Gos must be shaking in his boots at the thought of Eric knocking on the pearly Gates telling god to let him in. R.I.P ERIC And the first line is in jest Eric had his faults but his passion for the game and ASFC was not one off them.

But everybody will remember him for getting Stanley back in the football league.he had a dream. And that wos to get Stanley back in the football league. It took a lot of work and money but he managed to see his dream come true.with Eric a spade woz a spade. And believe me he would tell you the truth and never mix hes words. My thoughts are with tess.
