COUNTY Council buildings are being put up for sale to save public cash.

Council leader Jennifer Mein has signed off premises as “surplus to requirements” in Burnley, Rawtenstall, Accrington and Bamber Bridge.

It has not been revealed which four buildings are to be put up for sale as the council wishes to avoid advertising their empty status.

The county council said the buildings were not major features within the towns but that they did not wish to attract anti social behaviour or vandalism to the ‘small’ properties.

The buildings are said to be small office space buildings and grounds such as car parks which have been disused for some time.

The council’s leader Jennifer Mein said the money tied up in the properties could be better used on services.

County Hall chiefs are hoping to shrink their portfolio to reduce maintenance costs and generate some capital as the authority makes savings.

County Councillor Jennifer Mein, said: “These are all small buildings and pieces of land that have not been used for some time.

“We have decided to sell them to save money and generate income to invest in services.”

The council is expected to sell other unused buildings as part of the £300m of savings it needed to make over four years.

Lancashire County Council has been asked to reduce their budget by £800m to £500m on top of the £220m the council has saved over the last three years.
