JOBS at Morrisons supermarkets across East Lancashire are under threat, it has emerged.

Staff at branches in Blackburn, Great Harwood, Accrington, Nelson and Todmorden are being consulted over the proposed job cuts, the supermarket giant announced.

Although 2,600 staff will be axed nationwide, Morrisons said they plan to create 1,000 in its ‘M’ local convenience stores, and an additional 3,000 in new supermarkets.

A spokesman said: “Staff in East Lancashire will be potentially affected but it’s a consultation so it’s difficult to say with any certainty.

“We will be talking to people in all stores but I can’t give you a number because we are not there yet.”

Chief executive Dalton Philips wants to remove layers of management that currently mean some stores have seven tiers between the shop floor and the store manager.

He said: “This is the right time to modernise the way our stores are managed. These changes will improve our focus on customers and lead to simpler, smarter ways of working.

“We know that moving to the new management structure will mean uncertainty for our colleagues and we will be supporting them through the process.” The firm said the new store structure would merge department managers and supervisor positions into a single, smaller tier of team managers.

They also expect to promote 1,000 people into new duty manager, and to re-invest in customer facing jobs on the shop floor.

Joanne McGuinness, union Usdaw’s national officer representing Morrisons’ worker, said: “The next few weeks will be a worrying time for our members in Morrisons and we will do everything possible to support them.

“This marks the start of a 45-day consultation period, where we will look in detail at the company’s business case.”

Anyone remember when a 'job' was defined as being full time, directly employed, around 40 hours and paid a decent living wage?
Now a 'job' is part time, through an agency, on a zero hour contract and paying pence over minimum wage.
And as the numbers of these 'jobs' increase, who is going to be able to gain a mortgage, in face of the rising house and utility prices then be able to afford to feed any children that they may have?
Not so many, as you may think....

Less reasons to shop at Morr-i-sons. This is an ailing, failing retailer, stuck in the past as so many Yorkshire based businesses are. Tesco is not much better and its' Blackburn store is dilapidated and not fit for purpose. The sooner Sainsburys opens in Blackburn the better.

"Get out if you can" and go where. Really Phil do you seriously believe that people stay in under paid and overworked jobs because they lack ambition or imagination. People have been forced in to situation were they are not prepared to put there head's above the parapets in order to speak out about injustice as they will inevitably become unemployed. Pretty soon we will be seeing modern day workhouses, we will not even be allowed the escape route of education as a decent education is no longer within the financial reach of the average person. I personally do not give a **** about any of the political parties; they have all lied to us. However when I read or watch the news I now always feel that the quote "plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose", is relevant. It means the more things change the more they stay the same. To be honest I now think we are more poor with less opportunity than was available in the Seventies; I really hope things change for the better soon.

There is also a Morrisons local store being built on the site of the old petrol station, right next to the Spar shop!
