Claim over Hyndburn's bowling greens denied

Blackburn Citizen: Coun Ken Moss Coun Ken Moss

THE man responsible for looking after bowling greens in Hyndburn has denied some pitches are better looked after than others.

Coun Ken Moss spoke out after bowlers from Rhyddings Park complained they are being treated like ‘second class citizens’ and that their green is below par compared to others in the borough.

Retired driver, Tom Smith, 76, said the grass ‘is almost impossible to play on because it isn’t cut often enough.’ The Frederick Street resident said: “Other greens are looked after better than ours. I have bowled here more than 40 years and it used to be one of the best, but it’s declined over the last five or six years.

“We are entitled to the same facilities as elsewhere.”

But Coun Moss, who is the portfolio holder for education, leisure and arts, said: “I will raise the complaint with the parks department, but no bowling greens are given preferential treatment.

“I can assure you every bowling green gets cut to the same standard.”

Oswaldtwistle councillor Peter Britcliffe complained about the green.

Oswaldtwistle councillor Peter Britcliffe complained about the green.
I'm surprised he didn't submit an expense form for playing on it.

For all intents and purposes the bowling greens are private bowling greens .

They are not open to the public .

They are locked up , only to be opened when the select few who happen to be members of a bowling team arrive .

It is time for the Council to stop funding these greens.

Let the select few who are allowed to use them pay for them .

I have had this job for just over two weeks now and had nothing but a string of complaints and accusations of poor service in Oswaldtwistle from Cllr Britcliffe. Every complaint requires officer time to investigate and report on when those staff could be doing something productive.

I have no problem with genuine issues which require attention (such as at Rhyddings Park which was flagged up by the Friends of group this week) but this ridiculous political game that Peter insists on playing is wearing thin very very quickly.

A very nice gentleman from Rhyddings Park Bowling Green phoned up yesterday to discuss it with me in detail. He explained things rationally from his point of view and what the bowlers are feeling should be done to remedy the situation. I am now aware of what is being requested and feel sure that it can be put right. I have asked him to let me know in a month if things are still not right.

I have had no communication from Cllr Britcliffe on this subject. I feel that it would have been quicker and more productive it he had come to me first.

Still, a few more column inches, eh Peter?
