World Cup 2014: Are you flying the flag for England?

Flags across Queen Victoria Road, in Burnley

Flags across Queen Victoria Road, in Burnley

First published in News

FOOTBALL-mad residents across East Lancashire are putting out the bunting to support England in the World Cup.

Residents in Stewart Street, in the shadow of Ewood Park, Blackburn, are among those who have put their allegiance to Rovers to one side to concentrate on the national team.

Dozens of flags have been put up on houses, and bunting has been hung across the street as residents, such as Derek Rhodes and Ray Howarth, get into the World Cup spirit.

They have joined many others across the area in getting out the St George’s crosses, like residents in Queen Victoria Road, Burnley, who have also put up flags.

I have an England flag and also bunting with every country on, after all this tournament is great for bringing people together for a common cause.

Before I get negative votes, yes I am aware football can also divide people and I am also aware not everybody likes it.

Are you allowed to fly the flag, Blackburn council say that it offends if you are offended you know where the door is, This is England, a country of history and pride, we welcome all people so respect our values, flying the flag is not to offend but to embrace our football team in the world cup or St George on St George's day, i believe the Brownhill arm have been ordered yes ordered to remove the flags from outside the pub, remember this is England!!!!!!!!!!

Yes you can fly your England flag. And no, Blackburn with Darwen Council will not tell you take it down.

Someone pretending to be from the Council went to the Brownhill Arms and told them to take down their England flags because of complaints. But when the pub checked with the Council, they had no record of any complaints nor had any Council sent anyone to the pub.

It seems there are some people out there trying to make trouble by pretending to be from the Council and telling people to take down their England flags. If anyone tries this on with you ask for their name and their contact details at the Council. Then watch them scarper. I would also suggest reporting them to the police for trying to stir up trouble.

I'm not sure if your comment intended to have this effect but I am going to have to go home later and watch some classic King Of The Hill!

I was just going to say when did the Council say such as thing? And really if it does offend people, who gives a sh*t??

As I Muslim and born in this country, I welcome the World Cup and will be supporting England all the way through!

Note to myself: buy a flag for the car!

The community needs to stop excusing other communities in being offended and stop using this as an excuse !
