ONE of East Lancashire’s first two UKIP councillors, who reported his daughter for alleged electoral fraud, has taken her seat on the council.

Malcolm Pritchard was elected in Milnshaw just days after reporting former deputy leader Clare, and a year after she took his seat on the county council.

But the former mayor did not celebrate his victory.

Instead, he said he wished he had ‘never set his eyes on politics’.

He said: “I just wish I had not been elected but I’m here now so I will have to grin and bear it.

“Politics does not matter to me, people do. Winning is not bitter-sweet, it’s entirely bitter.

“If it had not been for what happened this week she would still in and I would have been proud of her.

“What has happened is wrong and I’m just sorry for Clare.” Labour candidate Clare Pritchard was suspended from her party earlier this week after the allegations came to light. Police are investigating.

She left Hyndburn Leisure Centre, where the votes were counted in Accrington on Friday, after being beaten by 112 votes.

Her relationship with her father is believed to have broken down completely, with Coun Pritchard saying any reconciliation would need to come from her.

Elsewhere, UKIP Hyndburn and Haslingden’s chairman, Paul Thompson, was elected in St Oswald’s, ousting veteran Conservative councillor Doug Hayes, who said he will now retire from politics after 26 years.

Coun Thompson said: “I’m over the moon. In my first by-election we only got 17 votes so this speaks volumes. Membership in Hyndburn is booming and we will not stop.”

UKIP almost saw a third councillor elected, but Ian Robinson lost out to Labour’s Jenny Nedwell by nine votes, after several recounts. Mr Robinson, who previously represented the ward as an independent councillor, said standing for UKIP was not a gamble.

Overall, the Labour-controlled council kept its majority of 11 with 23 seats. The Conservatives lost one seat, as did the Independents, while UKIP gained two.

Labour council leader Miles Parkinson said: “My immediate priorities will now be addressing £3.2m in funding cuts in the next two years, with the most important thing being protecting frontline services. We also hope to set another zero per cent rise in council tax next year.

“In Milnshaw, quite clearly there is an on-going family matter, and it’s very sad between a father and his daughter.

“What is now happening is a police investigation, and I can’t comment on that until it has come to a conclusion.”

The people of Milnshaw must be a very fickle lot, was it not Clare who fought so valiantly to save services at Accrington Victoria, She has worked extremely hard for the ward and this is her reward, A father who makes these allegations and makes sure the press are aware on the day before the elections. I don't think there is anything fishy do you? I understand this cretin resigned as a UKIP councillor the same day. will he call a bye election as this is fraud. I see the so called voice of GT Harwood missed out I am glad to say. I do hope the leaders of the main parties will listen to the true message on the doorstep, which is simply we want an in/out vote on Europe. The continual bleating of the Tories about labour leaving the country in a financial mess is not resonating with the electorate, People are not stupid, They know labour did not cause the icelandic bank collapse or the American housing collapse, or even the housing bubble to collapse here. We all know the people who were responsible walked away scot free and the with a large bonus in their bank account and we know who picked up the bill. We need politicians who will listen and act as we need,,We need to leave the EU as soon as possible and simply have a trade agreement in place. Britain is the warehouse of Europe, we manufacture a small amount and the companies that relocated to other EU states simply use us as a shop. The NHS did not get the profile it needs as the BBC did not deem it newsworthy. 70% of NHS work is now done by contractors under the NHS banner, the local CCG is struggling to pay the surgery staff but hey that was not news worthy.

The result in the Milnshaw ward is a disgrace .

Why was there no Conservative candidate in this ward ?

Which politician would do something illegal , putting his/her political career in risk , just for the sake of 4 votes ?

Straight after his election , in an interview with Radio Lancashire , Pritchard said that he was an Independent councillor not a UKIP councillor .
Elswehere , to justify this strange turn of events , he points out that UKIP is the UK INDEPEDENT party . What sort of a guy is this ? He does not even know the name of the party he claimed he was a candidate for , UKIP , the UK INDEPENDENCE party . It is calling for UK independence from the EU , and is nothing to do with candidates being Independents .

The voters of Milnshaw have been let down by Mr Pritchard , UKIP and the Conservatives .

Some serious questions need to be asked about this farce , and Pritchard should resign immediately and fight in a bye-election as an Independent .

This man is a fraud! He was not elected as an independent but ukip. It is him who should be investigated as a fraud not his daughter! You may twist words but i note you never made sure the very people who voted for you, were aware it was not ukip you were standing for as per ballot form? You have defrauded the public!

I have to refute the slurr you have made about one of the best politicians we were lucky to have. He should have been the M.P so what was it he did that was illegal?

Using HBC funded resources (aka council tax payers money) to bolster his election campaign in the form of ‘Grot spotting – HEAP’ and ‘Hyndburn Rose’ leaflets, both of which contravened the Representation of the People Act.. The CPS decision back in 1999 not to prosecute as not in the public interest, may well have been different had this happened today, following the current dire warnings to candidates against electoral fraud.
