Stepping out - AW style!

WALKERS are to put their best foot forward as part of centenary celebrations of the birth of one Blackburn's most famous sons - Alfred Wainwright.

AW, as his fans call him, was born in Audley Range, Blackburn on January 17, 1907 and started fell walking on the hills above Blackburn and Darwen.

He became famous for his hand-written and illustrated guides to the Lake District fells. More than two million of his books have been sold.

The six-mile ramble through Blackburn's countryside links Witton Park, Billinge Hill and the Yellow Hills via the Witton Weavers Way and, weather permitting, will offer glimpses of the Lake District, the Three Peaks of Yorkshire and even Snowdonia.

Anyone can meet at Witton Park, in the main car park at 1pm on Wednesday, 17 January for a three-hour walk.
