A GRANDMOTHER is set to cycle the length of Britain in memory of her daughter who died at just 13 months old from cancer.

Alwyn Hayes, 57, will be setting off from Land’s End on July 12 for the 12-day challenge to raise money for Children’s Cancer Research.

Friend Mick Fanshawe will join her for the bike ride which will also raise money for the Rossendale and Pendle Mountain Rescue Team, of which they are both members.

The mother-of-three and grandmother-of-one is aiming to raise £2,500 for each of the charities.

Alwyn, of Cliffe Lane, Great Harwood, said she wanted to raise money for Children’s Cancer Research because her daughter Abbie died from liver cancer in 1984.

The pair will cycle between 80 and 100 miles a day in their bid to reach John O’Groats on August 1.

Alwyn, who works for Hyndburn Council, completed the London Marathon eight years ago but she has never taken part in a long-distance multi-day challenge before.

She said: “Both causes mean a lot to me and are very close to my heart.

“I have been a member of the rescue team for six years and I love it.

“I will be thinking of Abbie throughout the challenge and I want to raise as much money as I can for Children’s Cancer Research.

“I’ve never done anything like this before and am looking forward to it – with a bit of apprehension.

“It’s around 1,000 miles in total and I’m worried that some days I won’t be able to get back on the bike.

“I’ve been cycling to work some days and I went up to Keswick on Friday as part of my training.”
