Blackburn resident clears mass of rubbish after losing patience with council

Blackburn Citizen: Litter in the alley between Borrowdale Avenue and Shadsworth Road was cleared up by Coun Ron O’Keefee and resident James Crutchshanks Litter in the alley between Borrowdale Avenue and Shadsworth Road was cleared up by Coun Ron O’Keefee and resident James Crutchshanks

A DISGRUNTLED resident took it upon himself to clear masses of nappies, broken glass and other rubbish from a pathway in Blackburn, after losing patience with the council.

James Crutchshanks, from Shadsworth, had lodged four formal requests with Blackburn with Darwen Council to come and clean the path at the end of Patterdale Avenue and Ennerdale Avenue, but claims his reports fell on deaf ears.

MORE TOP STORIES:

After contacting his ward councillors to try to force the issue, he spotted Coun Ron O’Keeffe in the area on Saturday morning. The pair spoke about the problem then decided to clear the rubbish themselves, there and then.

Mr Crutchshanks, who lives off Patterdale Avenue, said: “It’s not right to ask people to live near this amount of rubbish, but I’d just had enough and when I saw the councillor there we just agreed to do the clean-up together. It took us about three hours and we filled ten plastic bags.

“I’ve only lived here for three months. I first complained about rubbish in December but the council wouldn’t come and clean it. I told them I was contacting the Lancashire Telegraph and they sent a Your Call team to clean it up, but it was a half-hearted attempt.

“I’m not criticising the lads that came because I’m sure they were just doing what they were told, but they cleared a small section of the pathway at the top and the rest of it was just left.”

Coun O’Keeffe said he goes on regular litter-picks around the ward but said it was not his or the council’s responsibility to clear rubbish from the pathways.

He added: “I was just going up there to clean a certain patch and met Mr Crutchshanks walking his dog. Between us, we decided to clear right along the path from Shadsworth Road to Queen’s Park. It was an unbelievable amount of rubbish.

“Most of this was not council land and because of the cutbacks there just aren’t the resources to send teams out to clean it regularly.

“It’s up to the residents to keep their area clean and that’s what I try to encourage.”

If everyone in Blackburn picked up 1 piece of litter every day, there'd be 140,000 less pieces of litter on the street. Every day! It's sad that this alley has got to this state, but I commend the guy for just getting on with it and cleaning it. Sometimes it's better to just get on with things rather than waiting for someone (in this case an under resourced council) to do it for you. It might not be your own personal rubbish and litter, but it is your town. That's how I think about it when I'm picking up rubbish left right and centre in Pleasington Playing Fields...

well done sir , but i think that now ever than before people throw rubbish onto street without any thought whatsoever who is going to pick it up. It is your rubbish take it home with you . I have seen just the other day some asian guys in a car and one of them thrown a glass bottle onto the pavement the bottle broke and there were shattered glass on the pavement . i could not believe my eyes how could anyone in this country could do such a act of hooliganism. And then you have drivers who park on double yellow lines on both sides of the road making it impossible for the emergency vehicles to pass.Just go to whalley range area in the evening or on weekend. There should be cameras everywhere.

Unemployeds should earn their worth by doing some community work picking up litter cleaning up parks cleaning rivers.
So you want the unemployeds sat at home watching tvs, reading papers and lie on beds all day whilst other folks pick up their rubbish ie wheelie bin collections .
When we were young we volunteered for any work like working to help old age pensioners and other charity organisation etc etc.

Perhaps those people who have been sentenced to community service orders should be forced to clean up the filth left by others. Also those who are arrested for littering or illegal dumping should be forced to clean up their own mess and also other people's mess too. If they are subject to poetic justice they and others may think twice about illegally disposing their waste in future. I also believe that this should be imposed on all sections of society too.

There seems to be a strange belief in the brains of some people that there is a cleaning fairy, she is there ready and waiting for a litter drop and does this for free! The three people i live with also believe in her, yes she does exist, it is me!
I was brought up to take my litter home/put in the nearest bin and not to drop it on the floor outside, i am trying to teach this to my children, it seems to be working, now all i need to do this inside our house!
