THE controversial renaming of a Darwen street and the replacing of an old decorative stone has been welcomed by a former member of the now-defunct Darwen Civic Society.

As reported in the Lancashire Telegraph last week, Grime Street, off Vale Street, has been renamed Garibaldi Terrace after a stone bearing the name was removed during clearance works in the area, now part of the Orchard Park development.

Historians said they were baffled at the decision to revert to what had been perceived to be the original name, as Grime Street pre-dated Garibaldi Terrace and the two were separate.

David Pack, of Earnsdale Road, told the Lancashire Telegraph: “The original Garibaldi Terrace was located on the site of the new houses numbered 15, 17 and 19 Harwood Street.

“Possibly the stone should have been placed on one of these houses.

“Only the builders know why it has appeared in Grime Street.

“However, I must state that I am pleased that the stone was saved and incorporated in the new development.”
