Three arrested in Blackburn shop immigration raid

Blackburn Citizen: Geo Superstore in Bennington Street Geo Superstore in Bennington Street

THREE illegal immigrants face deportation after being arrested following a raid on a Blackburn shop after a tip-off.

Two men, from Pakistan, were discovered working at Geo Superstore, in Bennington Street, Home Office enforcement officers said. After being quizzed about their right to be in the UK, both men were arrested.

A company director, however, yesterday said the men were not employees, just shoppers.

One of the men, a 29-year-old, will be detained until deportation, a Home Office spokesman said.

The other, 43, was bailed while steps were taken to remove him from the UK. Another man, also from Pakistan, was arrested later, being found at an address in Walter Street. The 36-year-old was also released until the legal process is completed.

Geo Superstore, which describes itself as a ‘family convenience store’ on its website, could face a fine of up to £20,000 if it cannot prove the correct right-to-work checks were carried out.

But director Basharat Asad said he did not know either of the men. “One was shopping, and one was buying meat. Neither worked here,” he said.

“The officers asked if I had paperwork for my employees, and I supplied photocopies of their passports.

Home Office immigration enforcement lead for Lancashire, Karen McDonough, said: “Illegal working defrauds the taxpayer, undercuts honest employers and cheats legitimate job seekers of employment. Those who break the law face financial penalties.

“I urge members of the public with specific information about suspected immigration abuse to get in touch.”

Good. The fines of £10k per illegal employee should be imposed to the maximum.

Do any of these shops ever pay the £10K fine?

Or do they think up wonderful excuses, and avoid paying anything?
As regards releasing them before you deport them, how many simply vanish and go and start working somewhere else?

Does anybody know the figures for these people who escape being deported?

Catching them is a complete waste of time if they are then bailed. It doesn't take a clarvoyant to see what they have to lose. They will just do a runner and vanish.

Last November, supermarket giant Tesco, was fined an eye-watering £115k (or £5k per person) for allowing 23 foreigners, whom were legally in the country on student visas, to work more than their permitted hours.
If a multi-national like Tesco can get hit by such a fine, with their ability to employ highly paid lawyers, what chance the 'little man' then?

Then when a prosecution is about to be made the owners will be out of the country as usual. This is a real problem with Asian and other immigrants as those working for them are usually relatives who supposedly are here on holiday but working at the same time thus depriving the government of much needed income.this is how many Asian businesses can survive when others fail.It needs a system that checks these businesses on a regular basis.no racism intended just truth .

It would be fairly simple to tag them upon release, but being able to monitor their whereabouts and find them if they do abscond would be too simple, wouldn't it.

In 2011 more than 1000 employers were fined and over £5 million was collected in fines.

If we make sure more employers are caught and fined, these illegal immigrants may disappear, but they will find it harder to find work anywhere else. Catch more employers, fine them £10k every time or even put the fines up to £20k per employee or more.

Should be a law;if you take on illegals, then there shouldn't be just slaps on the wrists and fines at all, those here illegally should be deported soon as with no delays no waiting for paperwork nothing. There are too many who take a free ride in the UK and abuse their power to take from the system and milk it for all it's worth!

Or you could just report the address where you suspect illegal immigrants are working to the Border Control Agency, then they can carry out a raid like the one reported above. This is the third or fourth raid in Blackburn since Christmas, so they will raid - if people pass on information.
