A TEENAGER who planned to walk for a late night takeaway saw the keys to his dad’s taxi and decided to drive instead.

Blackburn magistrates heard police saw the car being driven without lights the wrong way down a one-way street.

And when he was arrested and interviewed, Yasser Shah said: “It was a terrible mistake.”

Shah, 18, of Grindleton Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to taking a car without consent, driving without insurance and without due care and attention. He was ordered to do 60 hours’ unpaid work and pay £145 costs. His licence was endorsed with six penalty points which, under the new driver provisions, means he will revert to learner driver status.

Kamran Yousaf, defending, said Shah had been asked to go for a takeaway by his diabetic mother whose sugar levels were dropping.
