Edgworth and Turton villagers urged to have say on buses

Blackburn Citizen: Jake Berry Jake Berry

DARWEN MP Jake Berry has urged villagers in the Edgworth and Turton area to have their say on local buses.

Blackburn with Darwen Council has launced a review of its public transport commitments as it deals with cuts to local government funding.

And Mr Berry, along with North Turton and Tockholes councillors Jean and Colin Rigby, said residents should tell the council what they think.

He said: “Colin and Jean have told me that it would be very helpful if as many people as possible can email the council at transport@blackburn.gov.uk and tell them how important it is that North Turton has a service that will keep us connected to Bolton and Bury.

“Specifically that when they reduce the subsidy for public transport and cancel the number 37 service, they should do everything they can to support the new Travel Assist service. Emails need to be sent before Friday, January 31.”

I'm convinced Mr Berry must live on a different planet at times ! The ONLY reason the Council is reducing subsidy is because of the massive cuts (about 40% of budget) to BwD Council by Mr Berry's Govt which he slavishly supports ! The Govt has also withdrawn a %'age of the bus fuel duty rebate, making things even more difficult for the bus companies.

I am pleased that Travel Assist are now providing a service, - but this service is not subsidised so unless folk use it it will close. I really hope Travel Assist do well, good luck to them. If in the future Travel Assist need a sudsidy they need look no further than North Turton Parish Council who have a reserve of £62,000, twice the amount of their yearly budget ! Why not ask them for some money Mr Berry as Parish Councils are not subjected to your draconian cuts.

Jake Berry has got his facts wrong once again. The number 37 bus IS NOT being cancelled. It will still run from Darwen to Edgworth.
