Design guru Wayne Hemingway aims to boost town’s culture

Wayne Hemingway, above, is passionate about Blackburn is Open

DESIGNER Wayne Hemingway called on entrepreneurs to follow his lead and start their business in his home town as the Blackburn is Open project got into full swing.

The launch party held yesterday in King William Street celebrated the opening of the town’s first pop-up art centre.

And it promoted the pioneering Blackburn is Open scheme which aims to ‘wage war’ on the town’s empty shops and promote creative enterprises, particularly among young people.

Mr Hemingway said: “Blackburn is the town that I was born in, the town that I grew up in and the town that made me.

“It’s where I opened my first shop and where I began my career and so it’s really important to me to get involved in a project like this and do what’s best for the town.

“I still have family here and I’m a Blackburn Rovers supporter and I want the town to do well.

“Blackburn town centre needs to be lively and vibrant. It needs to return to being a place that people want to visit.

“This will help it become all those things and more, and everybody will benefit.”

Guests also visited the St Johns Centre, which is being transformed into a gallery and arts studio for Blackburn students.

Leader of Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, Kate Hollern said: “This scheme will really benefit everyone, especially the young creative people we have so many of in this town.

“The atmosphere at the launch was just buzzing and it’s what we hope the centre of Blackburn will be like everyday.”

The event championed local enterprise, serving food provided by vegetarian café Sprout of Darwen Street and displayed an exhibition both created and curated by Great Harwood artist Nicola Hebson, who has been helped by the scheme since October.

Nicola said: “Blackburn is Open has helped me a lot. I will be opening my own shop in King William Street, thanks to their help, which is something that I had always wanted.

“They have really encouraged me to thrive.”

I support new business ventures in Blackburn 100% not corporate chains coming in and essentially enslaving the working population, but those who have an idea and a vision and want to see that positively affect Blackburn... Not just for financial gain, but as this article states, cultural gain.

That being said I can't help find myself thinking that this is going to be a very flawed project and that's for one reason and one reason alone.. Art and Blackburners don't fall into the same category. I saw some nice pieces throughout the time this has been used as some form of art centre, most recently there were a tonne of hand made paper lanters which looked great. Despite this, I would never purchase one of them, nor would I recommend anyone go and view them or see them. This will most likely be the attitude of most Blackburners (and surrounding area).

Fingers crossed this idea will grow, it will become a positive thing for Blackburn and I would love to see my comments above proven wrong and see culture through both heritiage and art come to the forefront of our towns society. At this moment in time though, I'm struggling to believe that's going to be the case, I don't believe Blackburn town centre needs shops, it needs people. At the moment we have barely anyone around town, and if they are they're all in the Mall so they go to town for one reason and one reason alone... We need people to be living in the centre so they NEED the facilities that are going to be put in...

It's not build it and they will come anymore... It's come and they will build it.

You always come up with a negative comment. Do you ever think positively at anything? If you could engage your brain cells correctly there could be a way but your type always bring things down and gloom is your main principle approach.

Why don't you pack your bags and leave, and let the pros do their bit.
Your days are over. Why else would you classify yourself as a 'pensioner'!, and no doubt your dirty chum 'Mug' will come out trying to rescue you.

I have left young man, I left because of people like you taking over, this was my choice and I am perfectly happy with it.
Do I very think positively ? Yes but not about my old town because any one who goes there now gets out quickly and there are thousand who would leave but can't get out. When I get up I don't see filthy back streets, I don't feel threatened any more, I walk round where people pass me and say good morning, yes young man I am very positive about my life, it's the poor buggers I've left behind I feel sorry for.
As far as the Pros doing there bit we will wait and see if they are successful, I personally doubt it.
Keep asking the questions young man and I will try to answer them as positively as I can!!

Blackburn need some investments like more pubs, restaurants, eateries like Starbucks Pizza Hut, KFC, Harry Ramsden and more big name stores in the Mall as at the moment many shop units are unfilled.
Regeneration around Boulevard like the hotel offices and a new bus station will boost the town centre economy.
Blackburn need more retail and leisure industries in the town centre as more people are heading to Preston and Manchester.

Young man! Young man!, you calling me a young man!
I'm older than you young sister but enough energy left within me to overtake and beat any normal member of the young generation and at the same time support them in achieving thegoals I set in my young childhood. You should also lead the example and guide them of success what the modern generation are deprived of rather than negatively shrugging off what could be a success. Correct me if I'm wrong but you left Blackburn whilst searching for a ward where no Asians were residing! Hey?
I can't, I won't, maybe is what you dream off but what we don't need is the likes of you pulling others down into something that you never achieved.

Hi M. Danny
Kendal, Kirkby Lonsdale, Settle, Ribchester, Langho, no don't turn this into a Asian/Black thing as you called it, I left because I wanted to and I could afford to end off,
My opinion of the town is not purely down to Asians being there it's about trying to better myself which I have always tried to do, it may suit some people to pull the race card when they see my comments but I'm a bit long in the tooth to fall for that lame excuse, I have an opinion and that's just it.

Danny Kendal, Kirkby Lonsdale, Settle, Ribchester, Langho, no don't turn this into a Asian/Black thing as you called it, I left because I wanted to and I could afford to end off, My opinion of the town is not purely down to Asians being there it's about trying to better myself which I have always tried to do, it may suit some people to pull the race card when they see my comments but I'm a bit long in the tooth to fall for that lame excuse, I have an opinion and that's just it. Well you can't knock the man for trying & you have to start somewhere.

I think Blackburn has lost its identity but with the right investment, shops & eateries I do feel it can thrive again.

The likes of KFC, Pizza Hut will not attract the people who spend the real money. Specialist shops & individual restaurants will. i've said it a hundred times before, people who go shopping like to make a day of it & also have a nice meal...fast food restaurants are not in the same league as a nice restaurant.

Regeneration around Boulevard like the hotel offices and a new bus station will boost the town centre economy.
Blackburn need more retail and leisure industries in the town centre as more people are heading to Preston and Manchester.
I'm afraid Danny that's not the case.

"Big name stores"

So what you're saying is Blackburn will be better if we had more big brands and materialistic goods? This is a common misconceptions, more shops does not mean more business, half the people in this town can't afford to shop at the ones we have... Which is why Brighthouse and Perfect Home exist... Because people need to buy stuff on credit because they CAN'T AFFORD but they still WANT.

We need Industry and culture mate. We need a reason for Blackburn to be on the map, we need a reason for Blackburners to be proud and get out of bed in the morning... But if you want this town to become one big shopping centre, then quite frankly I sure as hell don't want to live in it.

You do realise that it doesn't create jobs or bring money to the town? It just means that everyone who works there spends their wage in another store where all this money is sent back down to the City or the companys HQ and we never see it again. When was the last time Primark, Next, H&M and the likes held a community day? When was the last time ANY of those big name stores did anything for our town or our community other than gracing us with their presence? Nothing.

So without coming across too aggressive Danny, get your head out of your backside because that will in no way restore any pride in this town which has been lost over this generation. "KFC YAY! I love my town because I can buy chicken buckets... not that I can't already do that a thousand times over on Darwen Street". Get real and undertstand that it's the peoples responsibility to change this world we live in... Not a corporate chain that cares about nothing other than our money.
