RUBBISH including scrap wood, carpet and carrier bags full of waste have been dumped in an Accrington alley.

Furious residents contacted the Lancashire Telegraph after the rubbish, which appears to be the result of a home refurbishment, was left behind Whalley Road.

Coun Miles Parkinson, leader of Hyndburn Borough Council and ward councillor for the area, said if those responsible were caught they would be dealt with appropriately.

He said: “Any person causing a nuisance to neighbours, be that through fly-tipping or any other means, will be punished.

“If residents see anyone doing this they should take their number plate or, if they know who they are, report them to the council.

“In the meantime they can contact the council and we will come out and clear it, albeit at our own expense.

“The fly-tippers should not be dumping their rubbish in this manner.

“People must dispose of their rubbish correctly and if they don’t and we find out who they are, we will prosecute them.”

In August last year, two people were made to pay more than £2,000 between them after successful prosecutions for fly-tipping in the town.

Andrew Bloomer was left £1,145 worse off after dumping bags of rubbish in the alley behind his Midland Street House. And having more than 20 black bin bags full of rubbish in her back yard cost Toni Oxton, of Penny House Lane, £1,000.”

Hyndburn Council deputy leader and cabinet member for environment, Coun Clare Pritchard, said: “We take a hard line on anti-social behaviour and will always take people who dump rubbish in their own back yard, in the alley behind their home, or anywhere else, to court, if necessary.”
