Crunch time – 100 wanted for glasswalk at Blackburn Youth Zone
3:30pm Monday 13th January 2014 in News
BRAVE ‘soles’ are being invited to walk across broken glass to raise cash for Blackburn Youth Zone’s Teen Leaders appeal The £6million Youth Zone, in Jubilee Street, hopes 100 people will walk over 15 feet of broken glass in a stunt also known as ‘ice walking’.
Organisers lay out hundreds of broken and sterilised bottles which participants then walk across. Money raised will go towards the Teen Leaders appeal, run in partnership with the Lancashire Telegraph.
We want to raise £60,000 to help train 100 young leaders who will earn vital qualifications while also improving the local community. Events manager at the Youth Zone, Laura Jones, has urged people to get involved.
She said: “Without the success of events such as the glasswalk, we would not be able to invest in keeping our vital services afloat. By taking part in this event, people will be contributing to ensuring that our young people can play a pivotal role in a brighter future for our area.
“We’d be delighted to welcome spectators to come and support the glasswalkers and are looking forward to as many people as possible being in the crowd to cheer on the brave souls.”
The glasswalk, on March 5, has been organised by Firewalk UK. Owner Scott Bell said: “We are really looking forward to hosting the event at Blackburn Youth Zone. The idea of walking on razor-sharp broken glass is very scary to most people.
“However, once they understand the principles behind it, they relax with the knowledge that we have taken thousands of people across the broken glass all without an injury.”
A training session will take place prior to the glass walk, which is open to anybody over the age of 16. A £30 registration fee will secure a place, and a minimum sponsorship target of £100 must also be pledged.
