Blackburn bus drivers in vote for strike

Blackburn Citizen: Blackburn bus drivers in vote for strike Blackburn bus drivers in vote for strike

DRIVERS at Blackburn’s Intack bus depot have voted overwhelmingly for industrial action across East Lancashire but any strikes will take place in the New Year.

This week a ballot result gave their union Unite power to call a strike or other measures.

North-West official Cathy Rudderforth is now in talks with bosses a bus company Transdev-Lancashire United to find a formula for avoiding the action.

The dispute is over new shift patterns and changes to drivers’ working hours and breaks.

After an earlier vote to strike, intensive talks between union officials and management made some progress before this week’s ballot on whether to renew Unite’s power to call a strike or strikes.

The former Blackburn Transport depot has 180 drivers operating 75 routes.

They stretch as far as Clitheroe, Manchester, Burnley and Preston and comprise more than 1,000 services a day.

Ms Rudderforth said: “The was an 81 per cent vote of 106 drivers in favour of industrial action. That is overwhelming This is about rosters. The original proposal was unacceptable to drivers at the depot and the ballot confirms the latest one is also not acceptable.

“We shall be continuing talks over the Christmas period.

“We hope we can find a solution to this dispute acceptable to drivers and managements.

“There will be no action over the festive period.

“Any strike or strikes will be in the New Year if we cannot find a solution.

“We will continue negotiations but if necessary we have authority to issue Transdev seven days notice of strike action which could be for one, several days or longer.”

Transdev’s operations director Russell Revill said: “Following a meeting today between the senior managers of Lancashire United, the Trade Union and invited drivers, a ‘Statement of Intent’ has been issued which suspends any pending industrial action and by agreement a working party has been formed to discuss the detail of revised rosters and schedules.

“Our intention has been and remains to provide the best possible service for our loyal and intending customers.”

Firstly may i wish each and every Transdev driver the best of luck .

Also a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year .

Now - I welcome opinions - especially from past and present drivers .

I worked for Blackburn Transport as a driver in the early 2000's .

It could have , should have , been an enjoyable job .

It was not - ruined by a viscious little **** , whose initials were T.C.
Who delighted in punishing drivers for the slightest infringement .
I could give many examples .

Instead , I will tell you a little tale .

I was doing the xxxxxx run , when a passenger suddenly begged me to stop so she could get off . She had three children with her . She had left the iron on in her house . Instead I spun the bus round , and drove to her house - literally to her door .

She HAD left the iron on , and the house was literally moments from burning down .

I received a standing ovation from the passengers .

Who told me they were going to contact Blackburn Transport and recommend me for an award . I asked them not to . I explained why .

I would have been severely disciplined for going off route and not keeping to the timetable .

Initiative was not allowed .
Obedience was compulsory .

O.K. And I apologise for going on a bit !

Now - an open letter to all .

Specifically .

1 - to motorists - you hate bus drivers .
We keep stopping and starting , we are very difficult to overtake .
You are in a hurry to get to work - we are taking people to work .
And to school . We are driving a very large vehicle .
Please let us pull out .

2 - to passengers - treat us with respect , we are on your side .
If we are running three minutes late , it is not our fault .

I am aware that a lot of the above should have been written in the past tense .

3 - bus drivers . You do a superb job under very difficult conditions .
Been there , done it , sent the postcards .

DO NOT PUT UP WITH THESE CHANGES .

Make this clear to Unite .

Again all the best .

John .
