A LANDMARK venue, once the ancient boundary between Lancashire and Yorkshire, is set to be made accessible to more people.

Councillors in Calderdale have sanctioned spending of up to £70,000 to replace the ageing lift at Todmorden Town Hall.

Several problems have occured with lift breakdowns at the Burnley Road building in recent years, prompting the works.

Todmorden Development Board has already highlighted the town hall as one of its priorities.

Installing a new lift will mean enlarging the current shaft and making some alterations to nearby toilets.

Coun Barry Collins, economy cabinet member, said: “The current lift at Todmorden Town Hall is not fit for purpose and needs to be replaced.

“By utilising funds from the Local Authority Business Growth Initiative we can ensure that this happens as quickly as possible.

“We are committed to revitalising the town hall and putting it back at the heart of civic and cultural life in the town.”

Another £1,500 has been pledged to support a £100,000 Heritage Lottery Fund renovation application for the town hall.
