My wife and I went on a Thomas Cook holiday to Santorini two years ago and it was a ****-up from start to finish.
Nothing was as described in their glossy brochure and when we asked for help from their "rep", she was utterly useless. No help or alternative accomodation was offered and we had to endure two weeks in an utter dump, adjacent to toilets, in a small, squalid room and suffer an aggressive and unpleasant proprietor - all in 40deg heat with no air-con.
I coined an alternative to their advertising slogan - " If you want to ruin a holiday, don't just f*ck it, Thomas Cook it ".

The best way to avoid any disappointment is, when you see the hotel that you want to stay in, ask in the travel agents for the gazetteer. In there, you will find out exactly what the place is like, written by someone whom has actually stayed there, rather than someone who is employed to churn out blurb in a glossy magazine.
