Shock over hit and run of 5-year-old Oswaldtwistle boy

Blackburn Citizen: Jamie Marsden, who suffered a severe gash to his leg in the incident. Jamie Marsden, who suffered a severe gash to his leg in the incident.

THE dad of a five-year-old boy who suffered severe leg injuries in a hit-and-run accident has spoken of his anger that the driver has not come forward.

Dean Marsden, 36, his son Jamie, and their puppy, were halfway across a pedestrian crossing in Union Road, Oswaldtwistle, when the traffic lights changed to amber and the driver of a dark-coloured BMW sped forwards, hitting Jamie.

The youngster, of Haworth Street, was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital where he had emergency surgery, and will undergo another operation to try to close a large gash on his leg.

Jamie will need plastic surgery and skin grafts if the wound cannot be closed.

Mr Marsden, a production supervisor, said he could not understand how the driver could have driven off.

He said: “I saw a little girl in the back of the car. You can understand somebody being in shock, but he hasn’t even been to the police to tell them what happened.

“I was face on with him when he hit Jamie. Jamie was underneath the car bumper. For a split second I thought he was going to drive over him so I got the bag of sugar we’d got from the shop and chucked it at his car window.

“Then I grabbed my lad and took him into a barbers and got them to call an ambulance.

“Jamie was in shock. He just said, ‘Why’s that car hit me, daddy?’ It was a total shock, the scare of my life. We’re just keeping our fingers crossed they will be able to close his leg.”

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which happened on Thursday around 6.30pm.

The driver is believed to be Asian and the BMW is thought to have an 02 registration plate.

PC Kate Brady, from the Road Policing Unit, said: “I would appeal directly to the driver to contact the police so we can establish the full circumstances of exactly what happened.” Anyone with information should call police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

I hope the lad is better very soon - a terrible thing to happen. But where does Rishton, as in the headline, come into it? It happened in Ossy and according to the report, that's also where the boy lives.

It just goes to show that you really cannot expect drivers to obey traffic signals when you are crossing the road and must ensure that you keep looking, in both directions, as you cross.
Much as we may wish it, the driver will not have the book thrown at them, come up with some farcically lame excuse, plead the need to keep their licence and not be jailed, for what is a terrible crime, that is only compounded by their unwillingness to come forwards.
As ever in these cases, someone knows whom this person is but will do the usual thing of closing ranks, as the victim was not one of their own. This is another nail in the coffin of racial harmony and integration.
Let's hope the little lad makes a full recovery before Christmas.

I have just received a warning off LT for speaking my mind on this subject. Apparently they were classed as racist. Sorry for that. However running white people including children over on crossings isn't.

If it was a police officers child or a footballers child they would of found that driver by now. But because that poor little lad is just a member of the publics child the driver may never be traced. Children are told at school to always use a crossing to cross safely?? This young lad was in the right. If u go through a red light you get a ticket! If u go through on amber and run a child over u get away with it. Makes me sick. Too many criminals are getting away with way too much dont give them a caution or a tag or a slap on the wrist get them strung up and starve them and give them what they deserve they would never do it again. Dont protect the criminals protect us and sort theese scum out.

In the USA there is a saying, DWO, driving while oriental, because they are such terrible drivers. My daughters sister in law, who is Vietnamese, first told me of this.
I guess in the UK it would be DWA!

Really? Police make extra special effort to trace miscreants who harm Police officer's or footballer's children? Really? My god!! ......and the children of everybody else are left unprotected? You must take the evidence you have of this to your MP immediately for the sake of us all.

What's that? You have no evidence at all and you just made it up?

You're a blithering idiot.
