East Lancs NHS chief quits with immediate effect

Blackburn Citizen: Mark Brearley Mark Brearley

THE chief executive of East Lancashire’s troubled hospital trust has ‘stood down’ with immediate effect.

No reasons have been given for the departure of Mark Brearley, who has been in charge of the Royal Blackburn and Burnley General since 2011.

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust [ELHT] has been in special measures since July, when NHS chiefs made wide-ranging criticisms of the way the organisation had been run.

The trust has released the following statement, but said Mr Brearley was unavailable for interview.

Mark Brearley has announced his intention to stand down from his post as Chief Executive of East Lancashire NHS Trust with immediate effect.

Mark, who has over 30 year’s experience in the NHS, has led the Trust since May 2011, and in recent months has overseen the Trusts high-profile response to the Keogh Review.

Acting Trust Chairman, Martin Hill, said: “The whole Trust Board would like to thank Mark for his hard work and dedication over the last two-and-a-half years, during which time he has overseen some real improvements in the care we provide for patients. Over the last few months in particular, Mark’s leadership in responding to the Keogh Review has been critical in developing our action plan to respond to those areas where we all know we need to improve. We wish Mark all the very best for the future.”

The Trust will appoint a replacement for Mark in the New Year, with Jonathan Wood, the Director of Finance, becoming acting Chief Executive for the immediate future.

I am afraid this should have happened some time ago. perhaps the trust can start making inroads into the problems facing the hospitals. There are still some management to go before a full restructure can begin. We all know the cutbacks have hurt the NHS badly. However I have noticed the surgeons are refusing to take on extra work at the pay rates on offer, I hope the management will stand their ground to theses greedy people, I hope people see the surgeons in a true light, Money first people second, let's face it they are not poorly paid.

Lets hope the next one has something about them to see through the (mis)managers and recognises the people doing all the hard work rather than just talking about how much they are doing. There are a fair few old matrons in that place that are getting paid way too much for pacing corridors and not actually doing anything!! Apparently, if you are trained in holding a piece of paper in your hand or tucked under your arm, thats qualification enough!! Only of course if you are in the right place at the right time and can talk a good one!!! Get some fresh meat in and give the place a good old shake up!!!

This looks like a compromise agreement. Mr Hunt said these will not be secret so I hope the East Lancs MP's will ensure we the tax payers will be told the full story. It is interesting that it always seems the Director of Finance takes the Chief Executive's job on all these too frequent departures.

These people appear and disappear like magic. They never live, come from or understand our local community, it's just a managerial process.
No idea who appoints them, last few from Yorkshire, Merseyside, Cumbria?
Can't they find local leaders, good ones who we know, trust and respect, exactly how we don't feel about OUR hospitals!
Names, please.
