FAIRFORD Town Crier Maurice Jones has been awarded a meritorious service medal to town crying following 30 years of dedication to the position.
He entered a Cirencester town crying competition as a dare in 1975 but officially became Fairford’s town crier in 1983. He said he thought it was only going to be for two weeks until it all "got out of hand."
Town Crier at Nailsworth and Minchinhampton, and vice president of the ancient and honourable guild of town criers Tony Evans presented former town councillor Mr Jones with the medal, only 20 of which have ever been awarded.
Mr Jones described feeling “chuffed” to receive the medal, which was presented to him in on Tuesday, October 8 in front of members of the town council and his family.
