Top Labour MP stunned by diabetes rates in Blackburn and Darwen
5:48pm Thursday 17th October 2013 in News
SENIOR Labour MP Keith Vaz was ‘alarmed’ by the diabetes rate in Blackburn with Darwen, where nearly nine per cent of residents suffer from the condition.
A recent report said the borough had the eighth highest rate in the country.
Mr Vaz sufferes from type 2 diabetes and is vice-chair of the All Part Parliamentary Group for Diabetes.
He said his Leicester-based charity Silver Star would be working with MPs Jack Straw and Jake Berry to look for ways to tackle the problem.
He said: “I am alarmed by this news especially as it could be a lot higher if you include all those who do not yet know they have diabetes. Blackburn and Darwen is facing a diabetes epidemic.
“We need more regular testing to ensure that the condition is spotted early and people can get the right treatment as soon as possible.
“The government should also take steps to ensure food and drink companies take responsibility for the infiltration of sugar into our diets and that there is more advice available to consumers.”
