‘Shabby’ site at Darwen Leisure Centre site to get spruce-up
PLANTERS and flowerbeds around Darwen Leisure Centre will be tidied up after councillors complained that they were looking ‘shabby’.
The work, expected to start next week, will be carried out by Darwen firm Farrland Landscaping.
Council bosses would have got the work done sooner, but wanted to use a local firm to do the work and Farrland was busy when the order was placed on September 10. Blackburn with Darwen Council’s executive member for leisure, Coun Damian Talbot, said: “We know the area surrounding Darwen Leisure centre has become untidy.
“Therefore we have decided to contract local landscapers to remove the weeds and place new plants and shrubbery to restore the area back to its smart self.
“The work will be conducted in early October and I personally cannot wait to see the improvements.” Whitehall councillor Karimeh Foster said the council needed to keep on top of jobs like this.
She said: “I am pleased it is getting done now. The council has a duty to do this kind of job.
“It is a major building and needs to be looked after from the inside and outside. We have to take care of our town.”
Sunnyhurst councillor Dave Smith said he was pleased that the work would be carried out.
He said: “It was all full of weeds and overgrowing in front of and behind the leisure centre.
“It had been looking shabby around the sides and the front and we want to make it look nicer.
“We have got the planters from Darwen Town Council brightening up the place but the landscaping was letting it down. I am really pleased they are doing something about it.”
