Hyndburn widower to walk five valleys in memory of wife

A WIDOWER from Clayton-le-Moors is embarking on an epic walking challenging on Sunday to raise money for the Meningitis Trust in memory of his wife.
Cath Woods, 61, died suddenly last November after becoming ill with meningitis.
Cath, who worked at the DWP office in Simonstone, was very fit and she and her husband Mick loved to spend their spare time walking and going on trekking holidays.
To mark their 60th birthday Mick and Cath even tackled Everest base camp together.
Now, in Cath’s memory, Mick, 62, will be taking on ‘The Five Valleys Walk’.
The walk is set in the Cotswolds and comprises of nine short walks all linked together into a maximum of 21 miles. The idea is that anyone can take part and walk to their own limits, with buses provided to ferry them back to the start.
Mick said: “I shall be attempting the full route in memory of Cath as she would have insisted on completing the maximum. She loved her walking. We were both very much into walking. We used to do walking holidays in the Lake District and Scotland.“ Two or three months before she died we did the Pendle Circular Walk, that was quite a challenge. She was such a fit lady, it’s unbelievable what happened to her. If she were here now it would be a no brainer, we’d be doing the maximum walk.
“That’s what Cath would have wanted.”
Mick said that he was signed up to fundraising e-mails from the Meningitis Trust, and this challenge particularly interested him because of the couple’s joint love of walking.
He said: “They send round quite a few events and this certainly appealed to me.
“I’m not doing it on my own. Ten or twelve of her family are coming.”
