Blackburn woman's jewellery worth £7k in stolen handbag

A 59-year-old woman who took a handbag off a bus, because she believed it belonged to her friend, told a court that she had thrown it away without opening it after realising she had made a mistake.
Blackburn magistrates heard the bag contained nearly £7,000 of jewellery which the owner had brought back from South Africa.
And the court was told the bag and its contents, which had been valued for insurance purposes just two weeks earlier, had never been recovered.
Lynn Simpson, of Laburnum Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to theft of a bag and contents worth £6,950 belonging to Khurshid Bhayat.
She was made subject to community supervision for 12 months and ordered to pay £300 compensation and £60 costs.
Simpson also pleaded guilty to possession of a small amount of cannabis. for which she was given a conditional discharge for 12 months.
