Darwen based business is short-listed for top accolade
AN interior designer from Darwen has been shortlisted for a prestigious award for women in business.
Ally Houghton, who runs Ideas Interiors from her home at Carr Hall Cottage, off Duddon Avenue, is in the final six of the Enterprise Vision Awards ‘sole trader of the year’ awards.
The awards, recognising women in business across the North West, will be handed out at a ceremony on October 4 at The Hilton, Blackpool.
Mrs Houghton said she was delighted to find she had been selected as a finalist in the sole trader category.
She said: “I put in for the creative category and the sole trader category and I was invited to go in front of a panel, a bit like in Dragons’ Den.
“And I couldn’t believe it when I was told I had got through to the final six of the sole trader of the year.”
Mrs Houghton, who has two sons and is married to Doug, has been an interior designer for almost 20 years.
Originally from Bolton, she said she had always been very artistic and had started by just making curtains for her friends and family. She added: “When I was young, you left school and got a job. That’s just how it was.
“I got a secretarial job and I flew all around the world with British Airways.
“I was always arty and I made curtains for people in my spare time.”
Mrs Houghton went on to study interior design and spent some time teaching at Wigan College.
She said: “I consider myself an interior designer with a difference.
“I give my customers a five-star service as I want them to enjoy their design journey.”
