Blackburn man given 'chance to stay out of prison' by judge

A HABITUAL thief was given a chance to prove he had turned his life around when a district judge sitting at Blackburn Magistrates Court decided to defer sentence.
But Gareth James Harrison was warned that if he slipped up once the deal would be off and he could go to prison.
Harrison, 32, of Witton Parade, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to theft from Sports Direct, being found on enclosed premises for the purpose of theft, threatening behaviour and breach of a suspended prison sentence order.
District Judge Jones said: “I am giving you the chance to stay out of prison. If you commit another offence before November this deal is off and you will probably go straight into custody.”
Mike Wallbank, prosecuting, said the threatening behaviour and the theft from Sports Direct were linked.
Peter King, defending, said Harrison had a chaotic lifestyle but was looking to turn his life around.
