CRAIG Gibbens believes Goatacre must learn to take control in matches if they are to get a consistent run going in Premier Two.

The village club have not hit their previous high standards so far this season and the seamer admits they could realistically not have a win on the board at all.

And that is a trend he would like to see reversed ahead of Goatacre’s trip to league leaders Weston-super-Mare tomorrow.

“We haven’t really put ourselves in front in any games this season, we’ve chased our way to victories and in some respects we could have lost all four,” said Gibbens.

“Against Gloucester we chased 260-odd which was a great effort by our batters, we were bowled out for 120 at Taunton and only made 140-odd against Thornbury, but the bowlers did a great job in restricting them to 126, plus we were probably 30 or 40 short against Warminster at the weekend.

“We dug deep in all of the games but we need to put both halves of the game together and I’m sure it’s only a matter of time.”

The former captain feels that Goatacre have more quality in their squad than in 2012 and believes that small tweaks will see individual players - and bowlers in particular - work effectively in tandem.

“With Rob Murphy, Giorgio Rigali and Dan Ellis coming into the club we’re certainly stronger, but I just don’t know that we’ve found the right combinations just yet,” said Gibbens.

“We tend to bowl well when we bowl in combinations and I don’t know that we’ve worked those out yet, but that’s bound to happen when you bring in new players.

We just have to find out who our best bowlers are at each stage of the game.

“Also maybe the batting order isn’t quite right but Brad (Dawson, skipper) is working on that.”

Goatacre beat Weston-super-Mare twice last year but Gibbens is aware of just how tough his team will find it when they travel west tomorrow.

“Saturday is a massive challenge because Weston have started really well and we know they are going to be strong in the bowling department,” said Gibbens.

“We knew they were going to be strong last year so we’re on a hiding to nothing this time in some respects because we beat them twice, including on the final ball at our place.

“They will be wanting to avenge that and with their positive start to the season they will be full of confidence.

“On the road so far we haven’t played particularly well and we will have to perform better than we have done, otherwise we’ll have a losing record.”
