TWO wins from their first two WEPL Wiltshire Division fixtures might have taken some of the pre-season pressure off title favourites Swindon, but batsman Jon Sore has stressed that the County Ground side aren’t about to take their eye off the ball too soon.

A comprehensive thrashing of Marshfield on Saturday, by a frankly ridiculous 180-run margin, means Swindon have begun the 2013 campaign with a bang in their efforts to secure an instant return to the Glos/Wilts Division for next term.

Sore, who hit 70 of the visitors’ total of 273-6 at Broadleys before watching his teammates bowl the hosts out for a paltry 93, was delighted with the nature of the two victories to date. But in the long run he knows they will mean very little unless Swindon maintain their momentum over the coming months.

“There was a bit of pressure going on in the early part of the season, we’re aware of that and we talked about it in the winter. Quite a lot of teams want to go out and put in a performance against us and beat us,” he said.

“We did the job that we needed to do on Saturday and that’s key. We don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves, we just want to keep taking the momentum forward and doing the job we need to do.

“We don’t want to get too carried away at the moment, we’re only two games into the season, but what we’re doing at the moment is perfect.

“Hopefully by the end of the season we can do what we need to do and get promoted out of this league.”

As well as Sore’s 70, Swindon were helped by another solid contribution by overseas player Ardil Domingo, who hit 54, and teenage sensation Jake Goodwin.

The 15-year-old, who is being closely monitored by Hampshire, paced his innings to perfection to thrash a flamboyant 93 which included nine boundaries and four big maximums.

In reply, Marshfield never looked like getting close to their target. Aside from wicketkeeper Jack Ticehurst, who managed 33 from number eight, only one other batsman made it into double figures.

Michael Wilson and Nigel Dunstan both took three wickets and Domingo chipped in with two of his own as Swindon ran riot with the ball.

“It was a good team performance with the bat, the ball and in the field. It was a bit wet and the conditions were tough to start off with,” said Sore.

“Me and Ardil managed to rebuild the innings, it was a wet pitch and we both struggled to start off with. We dug in and managed to put on a hundred partnership to put down the foundations and by the end of the innings that proved helpful.

“Jake Goodwin had a free licence at the end of the innings and hit a spectacular 93 so it built that foundation to push on. We were able to post a good score which we used to give the bowlers a bit of leniency and they did the job they needed to do as well.

“They hit the straps early doors, took a few early wickets and put the pressure right on them. In the end they weren’t able to get anywhere near our score.

“We fielded well, we took our catches and it’s good to get two wins early doors and take the momentum going forward.

“We’ve all worked really hard in the winter to improve our games and hopefully by the end of the season we should benefit from that.”

Elsewhere in the Wiltshire Division, Nationwide House had an afternoon to forget as they were thumped by nine wickets by Winsley.

Having been bowled out for just 50, Nationwide saw their guests knock off the required runs for the loss of just two wickets.
