It is a well-known fact that ‘Money For Nothing’, by Dire Straits has the best first 30 seconds of any song ever made.

There are many who will dispute this fact but, when all is said and done, ‘Money For Nothing’ wins hands down.

It is also a well-known fact that they should actually let motorists design routes and roads in their own town.

Motorists should also be given the opportunity to change how long traffic lights should stay red.

I know we will have a whole load of people moaning about this revolutionary idea but I think it would make things all the more simpler for everyone.

Take for instance this one set of traffic lights in Blackburn which continues to baffle me. It is the road that leads up to the Asda shopping area in the town.

People will be surprised to learn that this road is actually named the A6078 Park Road (I didn’t know until I looked it up!) and it appears as you head down Darwen Street under the bridge and up towards the two shopping areas.

Now, this road is almost always at a standstill. Well, it is whenever I need to go to Asda. Would it really be too much to ask if you just put a small green arrow on the lights to ensure all traffic could turn left?

This would in turn help to ease all the congestion that sometimes means that traffic is backed up on two roads.

But what about the other lights? Well, traffic coming down this road normally numbers no more than two to three vehicles. Yet, amazingly these two or three vehicles get their own little green arrow.

After having sat in this queue many times, I peer around to see if we are all part of some social experiment. There has to be some hidden camera somewhere filming us as we find ways to justify our existence.

They laugh at us as we all edge up this slight gradient and try our best to keep our cars from rolling back.

Then, I realise that we live in country where they put the green arrows in the wrong place.
