Children's champions retires as head of Blackburn and Darwen safeguarding board

THE man in charge of protecting Blackburn and Darwen children from abuse and neglect is retiring.

The Local Safeguarding of Children Board (LSCB) chairman Laurence Loft formally stepped down on Tuesday.

The board, running since 2006, appointed Mr Loft as its first chairman after he retired as magistrates’ clerk for East Lancashire. He said: “It has been an honour to chair the board over the past seven years. The Blackburn with Darwen LSCB has developed into a flourishing and powerful body which has as its core function the very best interests of the young people in the borough.”

Nationwide, LSCBs ensure the effectiveness of work to safeguard children and young people by co-ordinating different partner agencies.

Blackburn with Darwen Council’s children’s boss Maureen Bateson said: “I would like to personally thank Laurence. His wealth of experience in this field will be missed.”

New chairman Nancy Palmer will take over on April 1.
