We love it when things are free, and I’m not talking about the ‘best things in life' – like the simple pleasures of a happy, healthy family and the like.

There are few places where you can actually get anything for free. So, when you are given something for nothing or take advantage of a free service it certainly is something to celebrate.

At a cafe this week I was surprised they had the tomato and brown sauce bottles on the table. No paying for small sachets at El Greco’s... They gave you the bottle and you could use as much as you wanted.

To most people this would be nothing worth writing home about but to me it was important. Here, was a place (and I presume there are others…) that really was thinking of the diner.

We want things for free and we want them in large portions. Over the years I have said goodbye to free poppadoms, free salads and free chutney.

I was being served free water up until the late nineties and then they bottled it and put barcode on it.

So, when we find something is free it really is a big deal.

You try to explain the concept of free to some people south of the Watford Gap and they have no idea what that word means.

On a visit to London I got charged 30p for well... spending a penny.

To some the very notion that something like tomato ketchup can be free is completely alien.

In the coming years I can envisage the following things not being free. You read it here first.

In 10 years’ time you will no longer be able to park outside your house for free.

You will also soon be charged for entering specific shops. I think shopping itself is a hobby and I know people will pay to do it.

Technically we already pay to walk in the park as we get taxed but a park will be something only for those who can afford it.

And finally, you will be charged to surf the internet…yes, Google will charge.
