Flytipping turns Darwen street into a 'slum' (From Blackburn Citizen)

He said: “There is a lot of rented accommodation in that area." Is Councillor Davies suggesting that all people who rent their properties are guilty of such behaviour? That is not such a liberal attitude is it. Then again his party is not such a liberal party any more is it? Don't get me wrong, I think such anti-social behaviour should be stamped out. However, to tar all people who rent with the same brush is prejudiced and narrow minded.

Another Darwen 'grot spot' can be the back street between the Community Centre and Elswick Street. Many of the houses fronting onto Sudellside Street are rented and whilst not all those renting them are irresponsible, some are, putting bin bags out, full of soiled nappies and half eaten discarded takeaways etc. Aall Councillor Davies issaying is that if people own a house, they are more likely to care about their surroundings and community than SOME of those who rent!

It is a fact that with a certain percentage of renters comes anti social behavior and I have first hand experience of this on a street I lived on in Darwen. I took great pleasure in contributing towards them being kicked out by their landlord. If you want to drink all night and sleep all day claiming benefits I am your worst nightmare!

Look at the back alley between Philip Street and Edmond Street .

Disgusting .

There is actually a Christmas tree lying there .

The coucil tidy it up constantly .
!0/10 to them and their employees .

It used to be a nice area , but was ruined when someone turned the old school into flats .

The dregs of society live there .

We - repeat we - have to put out our bins , then wait , and live in fear that
the vermin will contaminate our bins ,
as they are too lazy to put out their own , fill them with disgusting muck .
then steal them , once emptied ..

At least the Highfield Club is shut .

Hopefully the off-license is next .

If you own something , you look after it .

You pay your bills .

If you don't own something , and rely on benefits to pay everything - why should you care ? As long as you have enough to buy cider and ciggies and your Sky TV from the taxpayer (that's me by the way) .

I quite agree, I own 32 houses in BwithD and most of the sub-human scum that rent from me are a problem, Demanding this, Whinging about that, Causing problems for their neighbors, I take great pleasure in evicting them

roy davies is the only councillor what get of his backside and does somthing he has pride in is area .Sick of people who have a go with him

For the Record they are mostly good decent people, Where I do have a problem is the 20% of them that decide to fall out and break their own (MY own) windows when having a domestic, Antagonise their decent neighbors who deserve better, leave utter filth in the houses when they do a moonlight flit, Or damage the interior with their 'Tasteful' attempts to redecorate, All of the above behavior happens on a regular basis and when you point out they are in danger of losing their deposit or being evicted go squealing on about THEIR human rights!

I'll second that.

The whole of the Borough is one big litter and rubbish strewn mess reflecting a lack of pride, discipline and respect of many of its inhabitants. They are not alone as many of our northern towns are the same - Manchester is a disgrace. Whilst local government cuts have affected street cleaning the litter and rubbish was dropped by individuals.

King Fabulous is correct. I'm the only person left on my street who owns their own house and the sub-human scum who rent have turned this area into a litter and dog-5h1t strewn dump.
The back alleys are just a dumping ground for their filth as they are used to the State sorting out their mess at every level.
Many of them have been evicted from their council homes so they are now wrecking the buy-to-let properties at the taxpayers expense.

It is most gratifying to arrive home after a day at work to see that they have all been partying and drinking on the street whilst I work to live in the same conditions as they do - except I pay my own mortgage, council tax and bills.

One thing I have noticed this winter is that they can afford to have their central heating on 24/7 whilst I cannot.
With redundancies looming at my place of work I'm just wondering how quickly I will get the 42inch TV, cigarettes, booze, 24/7 heating, vicious dog, hi-fi, take-away food, furniture, carpets, tesco home delivery, free dental care, legal aid, car, insurance, ipod, ipad, laptop and holidays abroad? It just seems silly me being the only one paying for all this.

Darwen is certainly a slum town.
I used to live there for many years and it got worse as time went by.
Thank god I managed to move away but unfortunately, I have to return to this grotty town twice a year to see my elderly parents. Each time I visit the town, it gets worse plus the traffic congestion...I cant wait to return to my lovely home in the country.
Dont blame the council, blame the government. No employment for the youngsters who get bored and loose their self esteem, get drunk to shut out their worries, then get into bother and cause mayhem in the town.
Whilst on the subject of Darwen, the footpath from Santander bank right down to Lloyds bank is disgusting. It must be one of the worst public footpaths in the country.

The problem is Councillor Davies spends and through no fault of his own policing anti social behavior a job quite frankly the police should be doing with an iron fist. Personally I'd install Councillor Davies top dog at the BwD town hall and maybe we'd get something done.

well what we all trying to say is that pepole who rent and the pepole who on benefit and lazy pepole are lasy and expect other pepole to do for them and that over pepole is the tax payers

Why don't you read my post again and his time do it properly. I do not under any circumstances regard filth piling up in the back streets of Darwen acceptable nor do I deny the existence of it. However, I cannot believe that all people who rent are responsible for illegal dumping. If you can provide me with statistical evidence which supports your premise then post it here and I will be more than happy to change my opinion.

Such a pity Blackburn isn't as keen as you are. I had always been a Labour supporter but the way Blackburn with Darwen Council is now run has changed the way I vote. Then again, Tony Blair and all of his hangers on who are now with their heads in the same trough could very well be another reason I don‘t vote for that pretend new labour party.

(former councillor) I support Roy who often goes out litter-picking - it's good to see someone with pride in their area. Darwen is by no means a slum as anyone who has seen a real slum will testify - but it does have a small minority, who generally live in rented property, who cause a problem. On all the comments so far no-one has really proposed a solution! I would like to suggest one. Years ago parking used to be a problem but then parking wardens came along (against a back-drop of public dissent) - but it has worked whether people like it or not (and I've had a few fines and accept it is my own fault). With all the unemployment we have why doesn't the borough council appoint litter wardens who have the power to issue on the spot fines and who would be bonused on identifying fly tippers who are then taken to court - reduces the benefits payments and would probably be self financing and who knows - maybe the borough might win a pride of Britain award!!!!!

I'm proud of coming from Darwen but when I do go back there I'm sorry to say I find the town a total dump the place is just run down everytime time I read the Telegraph web site it's all about people fly tipping crapped up streets people worried if Wetherspoons are not going to be moving in to town, the minority spoiling it for the majority, personally I get p---ed off with the excuse that there are no jobs that might be so but do what I did and get out the place and make a life for yourself, by the way I left in 1972,

Maybe we should swap horror stories sometime, One high flying tennant who was renting a cottage in Wycoller removed four 18th century stone fire places and the whole central heating system before doing a bunk, 22k of damage and that was 2006 prices, His "punishment" after being caught? 40 hours community service and 2.5k fine to cover MY rise in insurance premium which he claimed he could only afford to pay at £5 per week, Drove away from court in a new Jag that was leased by his wife's new company!!!!
