New life to flow in dilapidated Darwen fountain

A CENTURY-OLD fountain will be restored to its former glory after a £2,000 grant from Darwen Town Council’s parks committee.

The Robert Shorrock drinking fountain was installed in Bold Venture Park in 1902 to commemorate the coronation of Edward VII.

But over the years it has deteriorated and is in need of a good clean and some maintenance.

Friends of Bold Venture Park chairman Harry Duxbury said work to restore the fountain would begin this month. He said: “It has deteriorated over the years. The stonework is chipped and the heads are missing from what used to be the fawcetts.

“It needs cleaning and pointing and just generally fixing up.

“We knew there was a grant available from Darwen Town Council and we are delighted we got it.

“We also secured £100 from Asda which will go towards the work, and we will probably put a bit towards the work from our own funds.”

Mr Duxbury said there would be a workman on site in the coming weeks who will clean up the fountain and advise the group on how best it can be repaired.

Robert Shorrock was a local councillor in Darwen and mayor of the town in 1902/03. He also came up with the idea of building a tower on the moors above Darwen.

He was a prominent builder in the town, responsible for Peel Mill and Cobden Mill.

A permanent memorial to him lies in Sunnyhurst Wood at the Shorrock Bridge. Darwen Town Council’s parks committee is responsible for a £25,000 pot of money available to friends groups in the town for deserving projects.

Already in the past year it has given £6,000 to remove silt from the paddling pool in Sunnyhurst Wood, £5,000 for cleaning drains and repairing paths in Bold Venture Park, and £4,800 to install new gates at Whitehall Park.

This is the sort of scheme a Town Council should be supporting - well done!

Wow, first the Cemetary Hotel now this fountain. Interesting to see where some people's priorities lie. Of course, the whole town will be improved immeasureably by these renovations. Just a shame that in reality the rest of the town will remain what it is - a disgusting eyesore neglected for so long by the people who are actually supposed to do something about it in the first place. Still, who cares about urban decay when you can waste your time trying to save the Catholic Club or some other cesspit drinking hole.

I am so pleased to read about this resoration, I recently saw this fountain in bold venture when visiting the Park and also saw remnants of the bird Aviary donated by the hindles.

And saw a picture taken in the early 19th century of a young boy taking a drink from the fountain in a book about Darwen.

The Shorrock name is well associated with Darwen and it is fantastic that this restoration is taking place that will preserve the wonderful history that this town has.

If the Friends of Whitehall Park make an application for funding then the fountain in whitehall Park could be restored too.

(former councillor) - delighted to see restoration work on all the parks but the comment 'we might put some of our funds towards it' is unbelievable - surely you use up your funds and then if you don't have enough you apply for funding - not just apply for funding because it is there! I have concern over the silting of the main pond in Whitehall park which once housed wild trout - heavy rain will probably lead to flooding all the way along the pathways caused serious and costly repair work - who is rersponsible for identifying and sorting these issues out - local councillors are aware and have been for 2 years but still nothing is done - and the friends of Whitehall, I understand, have their hands tied due to identification and removal of the silt.

Your monosyllabic retort (no doubt accompanied by a grunt and the scratching of armpits) must have worn out your brain cell. Nice to meet you Symboy - it's not that often that one meets a person who's shoe size is the same number as their IQ.
