Darwen set to get twin town in Africa

DARWEN is to be twinned with a town in Gambia after coaches from a youth football team went out to the West African country on a charity mission.

Five people from Darwen Spartans junior football club and a councillor headed to Africa with charity Football Gambia, helping to build a medical centre and a school while giving football coaching sessions to locals.

Club president and founder Mark Atkinson told Darwen town councillors at a meeting on Tuesday that the ‘AlKalo’ of Lamin, the town’s leader, in western Gambia, had asked for the towns to be twinned.

Members of the club had presented him with a replica of Darwen Tower, donated by the town council, which the AlKalo gave pride of place in his home.

Also on the trip were under-14s manager David Buck, under-12s manager Neil Lofthouse and Earcroft councillor Stephanie Brookfield.

Mr Atkinson said: “When we presented the tower to the committee in Lamin, they were overwhelmed.

“There was such a celebration, you would think it was the Olympics.

“I really want us to go ahead with the twinning and think it will raise the profile of the town and become a talking point.

Councillors unanimously agreed that the twinning should go ahead, and the council is now looking to get extra lettering put on the three ‘welcome to Darwen’ signs in the town.

Mr Atkinson said: “Everyone who went was a credit to the club and a credit to Darwen.

“They all worked their socks off digging trenches in rock-hard sand, building steps and coaching football in 40-degree heat.”

Football Gambia founder Ian Stapleton said he was delighted at the news of the twinning.

He said: “It is great news and works out really well for everyone.

“The Darwen lads are already getting ready for their next project, which will be to implement an irrigation unit on a vegetable patch they built last year.

“The twinning is a great symbol of the hard work that has gone on with the charity.”

Twinning ceremonies, taking place simultaneously in Darwen and Lamin, will happen in January next year, when the charity’s next trip to Gambia will be.

It is hoped the ceremony in Gambia will be attended by the country’s president, Yahya Jammeh.

A town called Lamin

  • Lamin is a town in Gambia’s Western Division, and is not to be confused with a small town of the same name on the country’s North Bank.
  • The town is made up of two main clans – Bojand and Manneh – who founded the town. Anyone not belonging to the two main clans is considered a ‘lountan’, or outsider. The Football Gambia charity has been visiting Lamin since 2010.
  • Gambia, which gained independence from the UK in 1965, is a country in West Africa that sits either side of the Gambia River and is surrounded by Senegal.
  • About a third of the population lives below the international poverty line of $1.25 a day.

So was this put to a vote for the people of Darwen.
I see the poverty line is $1.25 a day so there are some things in common.

No doubt our councillors will be planning their trips to Gambia and the people of Darwen will be expected to pay for it. If they want to swan off to Gambia let them pay for it

No, just give them a one way ticket and I would happily support the funding.

There are no perks in DTC, no expenses paid and the Councillors even have to pay for their own meal at the Veteran's Freedom of the Town awards so you can rest assured that your Council Tax precept is not being spent on jollies.

What a laugh, in the interests of togetherness you could rename the tower " The Gambian Tower" .

I thought Darwen was already twinned with somewhere, going back about 20 years when it was all the rage. Does this mean its now triplets?

Never really understood the reasons behind this 'twinning' idea but I thought they took two towns who were "similar" .....

Absolutely not. No trips are planned. If they are then Councillors will pay for themselves. (as Cllr Brookfield did on this visit).

Ironically 'For Darwen' was all in favour of setting up a town council costing us all an average of £12 extra on our Council Tax. The 'twinning' will cost virtually nothing yet they are moaning !

and as i remember english rose was dead set against DTC - but now his lot are in a majority - it now seems like a really great idea.

the hardly 'owt is not quite correct, is it? as a donation of £1,000 has already been mate to fund this trip.....hardly 'owt.

funny that some bloke in gambia can get a repilica darwen tower free but the fine people of darwen cannot buy one.

i like to remind a certain councillor about a book written by george orwell called animal farm - where the animals kick out the humans and form their own democratic community for the animals, by the animals - but gradually a true pecking order emerges and the pigs led by napoleon take over and use the mantra "four legs good two legs better" - but the councillor doesn't think the town's electorate would understand or be interested in the metaphor.

hasslem knows full well the £1k was to help the charity 'Football Gambia' - and to help kids from Darwen to build a school. Nothing to do with 'twinning'.
*
hasslem also knows that the replica towers will be for sale in the town, - but making the correct mould is taking a long time.
*
then hasslem loses the plot about a George Orwell novel ......did the animals and humans hold a referendum ?

indeed it hasslem knows all about the £1k and isnt it a coincidence that the place visited is now to be a twin town.

hasslem knows that the towers have been promised for months, nay years but nothing ever happens - how long did it take to build darwen tower - probably not a long as to make a model of it (that is unless you include the macot "Darren" - how much did that cost and why was £500 donated to each school for naming it).

heaven's to betsy - i thought money was meant to be scarce in local government

and what has a referendum got to do with anything - simple question mr rose (or whatever your name is this week) are you in favour of darwen town council - Y/N?

Whr are we so cynical, english rose? Maybe it's because local Labour councillors change their opinions and affiliations as often as people change their underwear. I agree with others here who suspect this whole thing will be hijacked by councillors looking for a nice, easy junket. Watch their expenses soar! I pity any poor sod who comes from Gambia to Darwen; mind you, it'll show them what 1980's Beirut looked like.

campaigned against dtc - but stood for election - kept on stating that it was pointless and would fade away - now his party is holds the purse-strings quite happy to stick his nose in the trough and now sees dtc as the best thing since sliced bread.

My mistake about the £500 - still £1,000 for a stupid mascot £500 to name it - = £1500 total. £1,000 to gambia out of dtc budget for what benefit to the town (which it amazingly now twinned with.

years taken to set a mould to make some darwen tower replicas - how long did it take to build darwen tower

and unlike dtc, goldshaw booth (where mr. smith knows where i live - but is irrelevant to the article and story) has 7 parish councillors - NOT ONE OF WHOM HAS ANY POLITICAL AFFILIATION - so, there is no jolly boys/girls club parading themselves along a pre-arranged agenda dependent on their political affiliation - so in answer to your question i have no real issue with the PC - i may happen to disagree with some of their decisions - but that is their right and mine.

What on earth has political affiliation got to do with it ? Is it the fault of Darwen Town Council if no 'independents' stand as candidates ? And if someone with political affiliation stood and won in Goldshaw Booth then that's up to the electorate. I can guarentee that Goldshaw Booth will have a pre-arranged agenda too (usually set by the Chair / Clerk). Meetings do not start with no agenda. Indeed any Councillor on DTC can put an item on the Agenda. Goldshaw Booth is likely to be the same.
I repeat my question - was Goldshaw Booth set up in a referendum ? You have no real issue with it ?? So are you for or against it ?? You are against Darwen Town (parish) Council but for Goldshaw Booth parish Council ?? Terribly inconsistent argument.
*
You know full well that the position of the majority party on DTC was that we would support the will of the electorate in the referendum. The vote was 'YES' - so we are now in favour of the TC. Those voting 'NO' have to accept the will of the people and now get on running a TC for the benefit of people in Darwen.
