A CHARITY swim at Darwen Leisure Centre not only raised money for Macmillan Cancer Support but also a few eyebrows as one of the participants lost his swimming trunks during the event!
Regardless, he completed his swim and got a well-deserved round of applause from the highly-amused spectators. The event on Sunday morning organised by Darrener Howard Yates, saw 32 members of the Darwen Splashers swim a mile with members doing two laps each.
The swimmers raised £631.53 for the charity, on top of cash raised at the event.
A further donation of £1,220 was handed to the committee from one of the participants whose wife had celebrated a special birthday the previous evening and whose guests at her party had each given a donation to the charity.
Janet Chatterton, secretary of the Darwen, Blackburn and District fundraising committee of Macmillan Cancer Support, said: “We were completely overwhelmed by the generosity shown by these Darwen people.
“And we wanted to thank Howard for his hard work in organising the event and to everyone who took part.”
