Darwen superstore plans make progress

PLANS for a new supermarket in Darwen are expected to go before the council in mid-October.

Lucite International, an acrylic products manufacturer in Market Street, wants to build a food store on its land to help fund a new research and development facility on the site.

The plans also include the relocation of Equipe Tyre and Autocentre.

The proposals were presented to the public during a number of consultations and have been amended accordingly ahead of a planning application being submitted later this year.

Chris Murren, of architects The Harris Project, said: “We have taken on board some very positive comments from the general public and local traders.

“And we have made some changes to the plans including the introduction of additional landscaping and the preservation of on-street parking bays.”

I think it's about time we found out which supermarket we are going to get lumbered with.

I find it hard to swallow the idea that a deal hasn't already been done.

The plans have not even been submitted to the Council yet, never mind go to the Planning Committee. So no 'deal' has been done at all.

I mean a deal between Lucite and a supermarket.
I can't believe they will build a supermarket in the hope that it will be taken off their hands.

A deal has been done between Lucite and a Supermarket but will be subject to planning permission being granted. During the consultation they would not divulge which one but its widely believed to be Tesco and will be roughly twice the size of the existing LIDL.
The whole of Darwen is looking forward to the 100 jobs it will create on low pay meaning the recipients of the jobs will still be on benefits (albeit different benefits).

WRT to the above, this is what I keep hearing.

So why will nobody admit that it's going to be Tesco, which very few seem to want?

Is it a scheme to gain planning before announcing that it's a Tesco thus circumventing the potential backlash?

I expect its a little less sinister, in that it is corporate policy. There will be a timetable very carefully worked out by the Agents involved about when they release the facts. The franchise is not the issue, more the size of the development on already hopelessly congested roads in a small Market Town.

Yeah, but it's those agents who are looking the public in the face and claiming not to know which supermarket we will end up with.

Lucite are behind them claiming the same.

People at the council are reckoning they don't know who will be moving in.

Do they all think we are stupid or do they not care that it's obvious that they are lying as it comes so naturally to them?

darwenTower - I can categorically tell you that NO Councillor knows the name of the supermarket operator that Lucite are hoping to attract. There was a strong RUMOUR it was Tesco. But absolutely nothing has been confirmed by Lucite.

Your conspiricy theory simply isn't true.

English Rose, councillors aside, what is your opinion on whether or not Lucite and their agents know which supermarket will be moving in?

who cares which supermarket it is the most important thing is that it will bring people in Darwen more choce and lower prices.

How's that work then? In my experience supermarkets are expensive and they all sell the same stuff.

What planet are you from .
if supermarkets were as you say they would all be going to the wall.
my advice to you is to engage brain before opening mouth.

I think that with an Asda (albeit small), Sainsburys, a couple of Co-Ops, Lidl, Sommerfields already in the town, the last thing Darwen needs is another supermarket. I would also propose that if it does come about is is most likely to be a Tesco or possibly Morrisons store.
Whatever 'franchise' it belongs to I cannot see how it will help the majority of the people of Darwen - it certainly will not give me anymore money to be able to spend, so if I use it, other retaillers will be missing out on my custom.
There will no doubt be some locals employed at the new store, but I also feel that smaller retaillers will be laying off staff as sales there fall.

That's a bit rich coming from you.

Tesco et al have the budget to hammer into the masses that they are doing them a favour and for reasons I struggle to fathom everyone believes them. It speaks for itself really that all the main supermarkets claim to be the cheapest. All of them bar one must be lying.

In my experience it is possible to shop more cheaply than the supermarkets, and that's before they cajole you into buying more than you need with all their 'offers'.

So far as I am aware, no-one will be forced to shop in this new supermarket.

They should make the supermarket into a mass offering of hairdressers, take-aways and bookmakers, because the provision of such in town is sub-standard.
