Help on hand for return to ‘Civvy Street’
7:00pm Friday 16th November 2012 in News
A SPECIAL event has been organised in a bid to help local service families cope with life after the forces.
A Transition Fair, designed to ease the shift from military to civilian life, will be staged at Kimberley Barracks, Preston, on Tuesday, at 2pm.
It will be attended by representatives from local authorities, the NHS, charities and educational bodies.
The event is open to all service personnel, and their partners, who are due to leave the military in the next 12 months or so and intend to settle in Cumbria or Lancashire. Major Bob Smethurst, the unit employment support officer for the 4th Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment (4 LANCS), said: “We aim to help all service leavers who intend to settle in Cumbria and Lancashire by providing pertinent local knowledge about the five main aspects of transition from military to civilian life.
“These are housing, education, welfare, employment and health.
“We have been really pleased by the commitment from local organisations to support this event.”
The fair is sponsored by 4 LANCS, the North West’s Territorial Army Infantry Battalion, but is for all service leavers from across the Armed Forces.
It will be opened by Councillor Mike France the chairman of the North West Veterans’ Advisory and Pensions Committee.
Experts say returning to ‘Civvy Street’ can lead to issues such as depression, family trauma, substance misuse, homelessness and in some cases suicide.
About 19,000 service personnel return to civilian life each year and it is estimated that there are about five million veterans in the UK.

They should be first in line for any job they apply for. It should be illegal to offer a job to a non ex-forces person over an ex-forces person. Jobs for Heroes.
It's the least we can offer them for looking after our Queen, our country, and our families.

This is great news for all the forces who defend us while we are here back on safer shores. They get very little in recognition in hunting down and dealing with terrorists. You are encouraging homophopic activity because unless youforgot 11 years ago it was illegal to join the armed forcesif you were homosexual so those leaving now giventhat the term a soldier serves for pension is 22years , that means the majority of themare non homosexual. Just put 2 and 2 together Gits.
Why don't you major Tom just go and put your jack boots on , bown shirt and swastika and start rounding people up .

You have a real problem with the military, don't you? Commemorating the sacrifice of soldiers in war is anathema to you and something you think needs attacking. You were spouting illiteracy on these very pages about the coverage of Memorial services a couple of weeks ago.
And what's 'homophopic'? Id that something you invented?

Hey crisbacon or whatever your face is,if you don't understand what homophobic means look it up in the dictionary.
And a dictionary is evidently not something with a presence in the 2 for 5p care home. It's absent along with the book of basic grammar.

What makes this particular industry a special case, after 22 years of adult service they get a imediate pension.
Anyone got a spoon go along they will be spoon feeding them next.
