Blackburn Rovers: Andy Neild's analysis of the season

SO the dream is over for another year after a season that promised so much ended in bitter disappointment at St Andrew's on Sunday.

Having started the day believing Rovers were heading back into Europe again, manager Mark Hughes cut a dejected figure as he emerged from the visiting dressing room at tea-time on Sunday, his face betraying his emotions as he struggled to come to terms with the implications of his side's shock 4-1 defeat.

If you hadn't known better, you could have been forgiven for thinking it was Hughes, rather than his Birmingham counterpart Alex McLeish, who had just watched his team suffer the ignominy of relegation to the Championship.

By his own admission, Hughes is a terrible loser, and he took the defeat at St Andrew's particularly badly because, in his eyes, it meant Rovers finished the season with nothing tangible to show for their efforts.

But once the dust settles, and Hughes has had time to reflect on the events of the last nine months, he will surely come to the conclusion that Rovers have once again performed admirably in the most demanding league in the world.

If you don't agree then try putting yourself in the shoes of those Birmingham fans who aimed an angry protest at their own board on Sunday.

Over the last three years, the Blues have spent millions in the transfer market, and regularly attracted gates of 28,000, yet they have just been relegated from the Premier League for the second time in three seasons.

On top of that, the Blues are also a shambles off the pitch too, with more bitching going on behind the scenes than you see in an average episode of Eastenders.

The fans are at loggerheads with the club's owners; the plc chairman David Sullivan has turned on his own players; and a bungled takeover bid by the Hong Kong-based millionaire, Carson Yeung, has been blamed for destabilising the whole football club at a crucial point in the season.

Rovers, in contrast, are enjoying the benefits that stability brings, with Hughes leading his team to a third successive top 10 finish.

Although it's a great shame Rovers missed out on an Intertoto place by a whisker (if only Matt Derbyshire had scored that penalty against Aston Villa in January), their overall performance this season deserves to be lauded when it is put into proper perspective.

In a league increasingly dominated by the big city clubs, Rovers continue to fly the flag for the underdog.

Over the last 12 months, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Manchester City and West Ham have all spent vast amounts of money in the transfer market, believing they could finish in the top six, and maybe even break the top four's dominance, yet Rovers managed to finish above them all, having invested just £4 million on two new signings.

And Hughes' side didn't end up in seventh position by some fluke either - they got there on merit.

After beating Middlesbrough on the opening day of the season, they never dropped out of the top half of the table - a phenomenal achievement by anyone's standards.

Yet there is still a feeling amongst some - Hughes included - that Rovers have underachieved, and not fully lived up to their true potential.

There was a point in late October, just after Chris Samba had scored a dramatic last-minute winner against Tottenham, which catapulted Rovers up to fifth in the table, when some fans started to believe a push for the top four was possible.

Even Hughes and the players began to buy into that dream, with David Bentley remarking at one stage, If we don't finish in the top four now we'll be disappointed'.

However, a sudden slump in form prior to Christmas, and the absence of a takeover, which would have provided fresh financial impetus going into the January window, meant that Hughes and company had to readjust their sights.

In the end, another dip in form, which saw Rovers pick up just two wins in eight games, between the middle of January and early March, ultimately cost them a place in the top six.

Nevertheless, Rovers can still be proud of their efforts overall, having taken the fight for Europe to the final day.

Of course, there will be room for improvement next term, and top of Hughes' wish-list will be an improved showing in the cup competitions, after Rovers meekly exited both the UEFA and FA Cups in gut-wrenching fashion this term.

But overall the future remains bright, particularly if Hughes can keep hold of his leading lights this summer and maybe add one or two others in the transfer market.

As Robbie Savage observed recently: "For me, Blackburn is the best run club outside of the top four. I think every aspiring club should be looking to follow the Blackburn model because when you look at what they spend, they are the best performing team in the Premier League."

Like everyone connected with BRFC I was disappointed after the game on Sunday, but as my other half pointed out they have had a good season, never being out of the top half, bet there are 3 clubs at bottom wished they were in that position. We have got the best team for a long time, R&R up front!
We will be back next season better than ever! Hughsey will conjure up some more bargains I am sure.
Look forward to August.

Thank heavens for Sparky!

If ONLY he could impart his spirit and his philosophy to ALL his players, things would be even better.

7th is most certainly a creditable league position. This fact is beyond doubt. However, League Tables are rather like Formula One Racing. That is to say a ridiculously small factor means a huge difference in final positioning.

An extra point here, and an extra point there, could mean the difference between 4th or 7th place EVERY SEASON!

The Players must understand this fact, just as their Manager does. 100% effort 100% of the time they are on the pitch, is essential. It isn't too much to ask, for the salaries they pull down, is it?

I agree the lads did well this past season - indeed, these last seasons - but they are on the mystical escalator. If they slack off, they will slide backwards!

Well done, certainly, but don't feel complacent.

Well done lads! Good luck next season, we're very proud of you all.

A little more analysis would be nice. Rovers allowed 48 goals this season. That's better than most (7th overall in the league), but still too many for a club with visions of European football. That number needs to drop by 15 or so next season, which will mean more steel in the back line to go with Samba ... or perhaps a tough and skillful defensive mid.

Also, some more creativity in the central midfield would be in order. The club's too dependent on attacking along the wings. More skill in the middle would open up space for Bently, Santa Cruz, McCarthy, Pederson, etc. Bascially, every side could use a Latin playmaker. Hughes will just need to find one who isn't a flop artist.

if you believe the press spurs are buying a whole new team, they are linked with everybody, even ped was linked yesterday in the mirror for £4M.
as for the season we have done well the big problem was lack of form by a number of players at crucial times of the season and i dont need to name names its been well documented by all throughout the season.
as for rovers missing out on europe four games spring to mind three home losses Villa pompey and the hammers, plus the away defeat to the hammers, to me these are not specifically must win games but they are definately games not to loose. you just cant afford to loose to the teams around you in the league.
after the dissapointment of last sunday heres looking forward to next season, and hopefully a couple of inspired signings by hughsie in the close season.

to all true rovers supporters out there

keep the f**kin faith

ps lets hope the banter and chit chat continues in good form during the next 3 months or so

The Sun well they are always right aren't they!!!
If you think of the patch of bad form that Samba and Nelsen went through plus the lack of passion from Benni this season. Things can get better but I think we have done well this term and hope we can hold on to bentley. He should have some loyalty as we gave him the real chance to show what he can do!

We now need a new pacey right back, an attacking creative midfielder with pace, another defensive midfielder possibly with pace and a lighting fast attacking player as we really pace

The season as a whole in the league was good,we do have an issue of sometimes losing to the bottom clubs to often costing us valuable points, hopefully that will improve.
The F.A.Cup was disappointing and couldhave helped with are bid for europe, the league cup at least we lost to a good Arsenal 2nd X1.

Next season better in the cups as this is a good chance of europe and hopefully a push for 6th in the league

Despite Mr Neild's pessimistic view (perhaps swayed by some editorial leaning) most fans that I know think Rovers have had a tremendous season. True there have been some disappointments but every team has those & some more than others!

By maintaining a top 10 position all season in the premiership is a magnificent achievement for the premiership's smallest club & all credit to Hughesy & the boys. Things are definitely on the up down Ewood.

Up the Rovers!

(note to Mr Neild: it's about time you started being a little more generous with the players ratings this is an area where you FAIL)

Another wonderful finish to the season from Lancashires finest football club Blackburn Rovers as size of the crowds has shown.

Is the glass half full or half empty, i'll take the half empty theory as it provides an opportunity for further improvement.

For me MaCarthy needed and still needs to be sold, his workrate was far far too low despite his undoubted talent that he posses.

The team seemed to rely heavily on Bentley and Santa Cruz as the cutting edge of the team for me this is were Mark Hughes needs to add a couple of quality additions to the team to balance out the good work that these lads provide for the team.

The cup games were embarrassing losing at home to Coventry just wasnt good enough as it highlighted the lack of strength in depth Rovers have in their squad.

Hopefully a couple of new quality recruits to compliment Cruz and Bents will see Rover progress even further next season, football needs us Lancashire needs us we are Blackburn Rovers we are supreme.

7th would normally be good for Intertoto or UEFA... &th is brilliant! and yes we all feel we have underachieved... we were also the comeback kids this season with more wins after going down a goal... poor performances against the lower sides has been or downfall... and although our West Ham bogie side did us a favour (again!) we weren't able to capitalise on it... As for Bentley going to Spurs? why? are they forgetting that he was raised as a gooner! it would be like asking matty or dunne to play at Burnley!

I've just read that City have gained the last UEFA place via the laughably entitled "Fair Play League".

What an absolute joke. Rewards should be based on how many points you get or how many goals you score. After all, that's how the final league standings are worked out. That's how cup competitions, including the European ones are decided.

I can just imagine the furore if it was decided to give Chelsea a few extra points for playing nice and not being naughty boys, which ended up in them winning the title.

We finished 2 places, 3 points and 10 goals better off than City. If Portsmouth win the FA Cup, out of the top nine teams there'll only be us who won't be playing European football.

The reputatiion bestowed upon us by Mourinho still precedes us, and it still seems on some instances that cards are brandished against our players when players on the other side are getting away with the same and worse.

When this ends up in a team who hasn't performed as well as ours nicking a European spot, then that leaves a very bad taste in the mouth. What an absolute joke.

Bob, Blackburn says...
4:47pm Fri 16 May 08

As well as the number of cards, the fair play system awards points based on criteria that includes:

"respect for opponents",
"respect for the referee", and
"positive play"

And how exactly are those measured then? It's beyond belief.

We scored more goals than City did, surely that got to be something to do with postive. F'in "Fair Play League" - I've always considered it eurocratic joke but now it's just really p*ssed me off.

If league placings were decided on how many punters you got through the door then your sad little club would be lucky to finish in the top half of League One. And it will probably be even worse next season, especially since the has-beens, never-were's and never-will-be's are knocking your sorry penny-pinching outfit back.

Get some real players, a real board and any supporters you can con into coming down t't Turf. Maybe the rallying cry of "we won't be threatening the play-offs for yet another season" might get a few through the door. Remember, animals and livestock don't count towards attendance figures.

Look at your home attendances against Mypa and who ever else you played 11.000 and 13.000.
Only when you were losing against larissa and tickets were £5 a kid did you get 20.000.
City deserve to be in europe because they will guaruantee 25.000 at least.
Rovers are pathetic.

Brendan Flood would wet his pants if he could 12,000 on t't Turf for a close season game against a team that nobody's ever heard of.

Burnley couldn't get 20,000 for a mid-week match even if they were giving the tickets away and came to collect the punters from the front doors.

Never mind, at least your gettng more on than Stanley........for now.

Listen to yourself. There's a Premiership side 5 minutes from your doorstep you moron.

And all the numbers that you're helping to swell at Goodison, what have they done to win a trophy? Nothing.

Your ground's an antiquated wooden death-trap and you'll always be the second club on Merseyside - a scouse Burnley.

"People's Club" my arse. Anfield's attendance figures - that's a proper European crowd for a city with a population of millions.

Just think, if Andy Johnson's goal had been allowed you still wouldn't have got in the Champions League. Being a big city club with a massive crowd you should qualify for that automatically shouldn't you?
