Hurray, the 2015 Academy Awards are finally here! It’s one of the biggest evenings in the fashion calendar, where Hollywood’s finest glam up and wear the kind of glamorous frocks most of us can only dream of.
Here are some of the key trends we’ve picked out from the evening’s very glamorous red carpet.
1. Fifty Shades of Red
In previous years, we’ve seen black, cream and navy as popular colour choices, but this year there was one hue everyone was wearing. From deep scarlet to bright crimson to flaming scarlet to deep wine tones, all the night’s most striking dresses came in some variation of red.
Dakota Johnson
Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson wore a one-shouldered scarlet gown with a sweetheart neckline.
Rosamund Pike
Rosamund Pike’s dress has so much going on – the cinched in waist, the leg-revealing slit and the lace pattern – but Rosamund still looks as elegant as ever in this striking red gown. Rosamund usually plays it pretty safe in cream, white or black dresses, but she certainly stepped her red carpet game up a notch by daring to wear this eye-catching shade.
Dorith Mous
Model Dorish Mous shook up the red carpet with this top and skirt combination. Who knew red-on-red works so well?
Giuliana Rancic
E! host Giuliana Rancic wore an imperial red gown with beautiful 3D flower details. Giuliana opted for a lighter shade of red than many of her fellow scarlet stars, in an almost-coral number that perfectly complimented her tanned skintone.
Behati Prinsloo
Victoria’s Secret babe Behati Prinsloo looked ah-mazing (as usual) in this strapless number. Behati arrived on the arm of her beau, Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine, but her dress really stole the show. The mix of scarlet and black makes Behati stand out from the rest of the red dress brigade.
2. The glittering gowns
The Oscars red carpet was awash with sequins, pearls and glittering jewels on gowns. Rather than opting for the understated look, these ladies went all out in off-white gowns covered in sparkle.
Felicity Jones
Felicity Jones made her Oscars debut in this high-necked number, featuring a pearl-embellished bodice and a gorgeous silky skirt. The 31-year-old actress is nominated for Best Actress for her role in The Theory Of Everything, but she’s already won our hearts in this amazing one-off Alexander McQueen creation.
Lupita Nyong’o
Lupita Nyong’o made a splash at last year’s Academy Awards and this year’s choice of dress certainly made a statement. Her dress took embellishment to a whole new level with its pearl and sequin detailing, glimmering in the hundreds of paparazzi flashes.
Faith Hill
Faith Hill brought a splash of glittering glamour to the red carpet in this plunging J Mendel number. The intricate beading detail and waist-cinching cut of the dress made sure that the country singer shone like a star.
Lady Gaga
The pop sensation looked like a human mirror ball in this huge sparkly gown. Sadly, it appears that she forgot to take her washing up gloves off before she headed to the Oscars, but we’re loving the fabulous, sparkly dress.
Jennifer Aniston
HOLD THE FRONT PAGE – Jennifer Aniston is NOT WEARING BLACK. Jennifer Aniston is not wearing black and possibly looks the best she has EVER looked on the red carpet. This shimmering gown is a subtle nod to the glittery trend, while the peachy-cream shade of the dress perfectly compliments Jen’s tanned complexion.
Julianne Moore
Oscar nominee Julianne Moore shone on the red carpet in this glittering strapless gown. Her super sparkly outfit was definitely worthy of an award, but we’ll have to wait to see if she scoops the prize for Best Actress.
3. The plunging neckline
Jennifer Lopez
J Lo looked her usual glamorous self in this navel-grazing peachy number. While there’s certainly a lot of Jenny from the Block on show up top, the singer kept her legs under wraps with layers and layers of floaty net.
Chrissy Teigen
Chrissy’s plunging neckline, tumbling waves of brown hair and leg-revealing split all make for a very glamorous look.
Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett Johansson shows exactly how to give a plunging neckline a modest finish with this huge statement necklace. It’s sexy but very sophisticated, and the striking emerald colour really pops against ScarJo’s glowing skin.
Margot Robbie
Focus star Margot Robbie’s dress featured a plunging neckline, sheer sleeves and a cinched in waist for a very sophisticated take on the chest-baring trend.
Lucinda Duvall
Robert Duvall’s arm candy sported a peachy pink gown with a rather deep neckline, looking rather similar to J Lo’s Oscars dress. Oops. We hope they don’t cross each other in the toilets and argue over who saw it first.
4. The off-the-shoulder dress
Nothing says old-school Hollywood glamour like an off-the-shoulder number, just skimming the cleavage and showing off some very elegant collar bones.
Reese Witherspoon
Best Actress nominee Reese Witherspoon wore one of the night’s most chic dresses, in a simple but sophisticated monochrome colour scheme. The off-the-shoulder adds a much needed injection of sex appeal, while the snug fitting dress shows off her tiny waist.
Jessica Chastain
Jessica Chastain went for a layered navy number, adding a little bit of sparkle but still looking every inch the timeless glamorous starlet.
Zendaya
18-year-old singer Zendaya looked timeless in this stunning silky gown. The off-shoulder cut just adds to her sophisticated look, while the nipped in waist shows off her enviable teeny-tiny frame.
Viola Davis
The Help actress Viola Davis looked incredible in this pink-tingled gown. This shoulder skimming dress looks all kinds of classy on the radiant star.
