Awards season is upon us and the Golden Globes are fast approaching. This Sunday, we’ll see a whole host of superstar attendees cavort down the red carpet, looking superhumanly gorgeous and wearing an assortment of fabulous frocks.

Before you start weeping with envy, read our breakdown on how to look like a Golden Globes red carpet starlet. Spoiler alert: you may need to take out a loan or rob a couple of corner shops to pull this look off.

Skin

Ever wondered how celebrities get that gorgeous I-just-came-back-from-a-vegetable-juice-and-yoga-retreat glow? We’ll let you in on a little secret: they haven’t ALWAYS just returned from a detoxing holiday. It’s all in choosing the right facial.

So, what’s the pre-ceremony facial of choice for the A-list crowd? Colbert MD skincare, of course, favoured by Jennifer Lawrence, Tina Fey, Robin Wright and Michael Fassbender to name just a few. Dr Colbert divulged to the Telegraph which products he recommends to his sparkling clientèle – with a hefty price tag to match. His Illumino Face Oil (£100), Stimulate the Serum (£115) Heal and Soothe Night (£120) were Colbert’s top picks, with a total cost of £335.

Makeup

If your face is going to be snapped by paparazzi and media outlets from all over the world, you’re probably going to want to call in an expert team to help prep you for those shots.

Last year’s Golden Globes ladies relied on the best hands in the business to create their beauty looks.  Emma Watson hired Kate Lee, Olivie Wilde went for Melanie Inglessis and Jennifer Lawrence’s face was prepped by Ve Neill. While none of these artists’ agencies would comment on their rates, but according to makeup artist forums like ModelMayhem, prices are upward of $500 (£330.69). Ouch.

If you were to skip the cost of a professional, there’s still the price of a top-notch cosmetics kit to consider. Kate Lee, created Emma Watson’s jaw-droppingly gorgeous look for the 2014 ceremony, revealed to Beautyeditor.ca that used a combination of Chanel, Illamasqua and Anastasia Beverly Hills products which we calculated came to a total of £314.

The Dress

The award ceremony gown is the most important ingredient to an attendee’s look. It’s what we’ll be talking about for weeks, possibly even years to come after the ceremony. But the A-list won’t settle for any old gown. It’s got to be custom-made or loaned straight off next season’s runway, and the designer will often come and personally dress the celebrity, making any last-minute alterations to the garment.

For us plebs, that’s obviously not an option. However, we could always head to the shop and buy an off-the-rail frock, just as Hayden Pannettiere did last year with her stunning Tom Ford number.

Topshop just ain’t gonna cut it at the Golden Globes – it’s all about high fashion designers, at very high prices. Oscar de la Renta dresses have become a popular choice, with stars including Zooey Deschanel, Jessica Alba and Lea Michelle donning his designs in recent years. Following his sad death in 2013, fans and friends of the designer will no doubt flock to wear his creations at this year’s Golden Globes. This red embroidered silk gown comes in at an eye-watering $13,990 (£9275.47, avaliable on oscardelarenta.com).

Jewellery

No Golden Globes-goer would dare set foot on the red carpet without a little bit of tasteful bling. Golden Globes dressing is all about understated taste, so most ladies will stick to some simple stud earrings, a statement necklace or a plain bangle, rather than going all Lil Wayne with the bling.

Cate Blanchett’s gorgeous Chopard diamond earrings were the subject of jewellery fans’ desire last year, as were Lupita Nyong’o's statement diamond studs by Fred Leighton. We’ve taken inspiration from Margot Robbie’s gorgeous earrings last year and opted for a pair of Van Cleef & Arples yellow gold and diamond ear clips, for the very reasonable price of £13,900.

Security

If you’re decked out in gear that cost more than most people’s annual salary, you might want someone watching your back. That’s why Golden Globes-goers will often have a bodyguard on site to keep thieves at bay. According to UK Personal Protection Ltd,a personal bodyguard costs around £250 for a days hire. In case you need to put that into perspective, that’s 71.4 Pret A Manger lunches for a burly bloke to follow you around for a day.

Shoes

When it comes to Golden Globes footwear, it’s all about towering heights and even higher prices. While Manolos and Louboutins remain a popular choice year on year, we’ve opted for a pair of £550 glittering leather strappy Jimmy Choos, a popular choice with stars like Leighton Meester, Scarlett Johansson and Kaley Cuco in previous years.

Total cost

Over all, looking this fabulous will cost you a mere £24,954.69. Just to put that into perspective, the average UK salary is £26,500. So you’d just about have enough money for a return flight to California. Tempting. Sadly, you wouldn’t be able to afford a $6,400 (£4,232.82) ticket to the after party. Ah well, if you sell your kidneys, iphone and soul, maybe you’ll be able to afford it next year.
