The pair, who are parents to three-year-old son Bing, confirmed the news to People.com. It comes after they attended the LACMA Art and Film Gala red carpet together on November 1, and the Love In For Kids event on November 21.

Kate’s spokesman said: “Kate and Matt have been separated for some time now. Despite this, they remain very close friends and committed co-parents.”

The pair, who started dating four years ago, welcomed their son Bingham Hawn Bellamy in July 2011, months after the Muse frontman proposed to the actress.

Kate, 35, best known for starring in rom-coms such as Bride Wars, How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days and Almost Famous, previously said she wasn’t concerned about a long engagement.

“My parents aren’t married,” she told Women’s Health US, referring to Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell.

“And one of the reasons why they never got married is because they had been married before and they liked it the way it was. They didn’t feel like they needed a piece of paper to be committed.”

She added: “So for me, I know that marriage is not a golden ticket.”

Kate was previously married to Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson, the father of her eldest son Ryder.
