Two fire engines and two wildfire units were called to a blaze close to Darwen Tower this afternoon. (Wednesday, April 24).

At around 1.40pm, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service responded to the incident and said appliances from Bacup and Rawtenstall were at the wildfire.

They asked for people to avoid the area while they dealt with the fire, and to close windows and doors if they saw or smelled smoke.

A Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) is currently in place for parts of Darwen, Bolton and Chorley to prevent devastation to wildlife and reduce the risks of wildfire on the moors.

The PSPO bans any activities on moorland that carry a significant risk of causing wildfires – such as lighting barbeques, building or lighting campfires or camping stoves, lighting fireworks, or setting off night-sky paper lanterns.

Breaching the PSPO is a criminal offence and could result in a fine of up to £1,000.

Lancashire Telegraph:

A spokesperson for Lancashire Fire and Rescue said: "We currently have two fire engines from Bacup and Rawtenstall and two wildfire units in attendance at a wildfire close to Darwen Tower.

"The fire is being brought under control using beaters, blowers, and water packs.

"We ask people to please avoid the area whilst we deal with this incident and if you can see or smell smoke, please close your windows and doors."

In May 2020, it took firefighters two days to extinguish a Darwen moorland wildfire.
